dustyfox
there you go you can use rabbit fur for dummies. http://www.safe-servers.co.uk/~dogstuff/ac...bbit_Skins.html Now how much profit are they going to make?
bob300w
I know that this is not particularly useful today, but they used to use it to make top hats. What, the skin or the fur? not taking the proverbial, but I have never seen a furry top hat (not that I have seen many top hats). You have me curious, do tell me some more. webber
bob The fur was used to make felt. The felt is used to make hats. Somewhere in the process, mercury was used, which eventually sent the workers mad. Hence the saying mad as a hatter! webber

Sorry if I'm being a bit dense here, but I have never associated rabbit skin with felt, was all felt made from rabbit skin?
Paul in North Lincs.
I wrap my rabbit skins around a dummy..........and use them for :- 1. getting lurcher pups used to having fur in their mouths..... 2. teaching the lurchers how to retrieve rabbits......... HEAD SHOT
The only thing I ever had made out of rabbit fur was if you remember parkers with a fury hood. Appart from dummies and fly tying, bin the idea. Any how girlies dont like real fur. They think its cruel.

Rabbit fur was originally used to make bowler hats for gamekeepers, to protect them from a crack over the head by poachers, the original hard hat you might say. It was an extremely skillfull job, the fur goes through all kinds of processing to make the felt, before being crafted into a hat, it's not something you could consider as a home hobby really. tiercel
If you want to know how to make home made felt. See River cottage where HFW makes felt out of wool. It is the same process just substitute rabbit fur (minus the skin) for wool. Looks like real hard work to me. Edited to say: it might be worth having 10 pints the night before you start making it. TC Agreed. Get the bucket ready in advance mind. You don't want to be stumbling around at 2AM desperate for a pee but cannot find the collection bucket. taggy
hi, i tried to felt rabbit fur the other day, sort of got it to work, don`t think i had enough layers (or patience). will try again and re-post. if you soak the skin in lye ( water run through ash) for a few days the fur comes out reasonably easily. rinse the skin well.!! lots of hand cream , its harsh stuff.
