just found a web site that gives you 250 buiss cards of your choice and design for free !

(£4 postage)

these would make you look more "upper class" when posted with your begging letters (for shooting land)

you can also stick them up in pubs and stuff......... :oops:

type in "vistaprint"

Are you a member of the BASC ?

If so, being able to state that you have public liability insurance cover (which members get), would be an advantage.

I have discovered that nowadays, Farmers are very aware of their liabilities in this area.

Isn't describing yourself (by your own admission), as a "Pigeon (Pest) Shooter", a contravention of the Trade Descriptions Act ? :oops:

Seriously, I think I would leave that bit off.

CM,

You sound really keen and its good to see, even though you have no land to shoot you are looking at methods of making sure you will have in the future.

If I was you, if the farmer asks if you have any land to shoot on at the moment then theres no harm in telling a little porky, think about it, if you have no land already the farmer will think he is taking a risk by giving you his land first.

Theres no need to go into some big story but a comment that you do vermin control on a few farms in your country could just tip the scales in your favour.

Like Cranfield mentioned, BASC can really help you and as I said before the farmer will know your not some dodgy poacher but a responsible gun who has insurence for damage.

Also including this on your business card with membership number would be a great help.

As for you marketing line, I would just include FREE VERMIN CONTROL, with a list of quarry species you can control. be carfeull with this because if you only have an airgun then major vermin control on crop fields is going to be tricky, but rabbits ect no problem.

Good luck

I understand exactly where the pigeon master is coming from as most of the land I shoot on is gained because I have the land next door and so on.....but beware that if you tell afarmer you shoot on other farmland (little porky to increase your chances) he may ask you where and most farmers know each other very well it's a community thing.so be carefull and my advice is to be honest.

Don't send letters or make phone calls go personally and talk to the farmer not any of his workers.you will find that this will pay off.

See if you can see any pigeons flighting into grain and ask if you can have a go at them (even if it's only today) the farmer will gain confidence in you one day at a time.

hi mate

know how your feeling ,i must have knocked on about 40 farms and got the knock back of them all,i live in cumbria but am from liverpool ,so thought it must be the scouse acsent,so i got a mate to knock on a few and got the same knockbacks,i got to the stage where i was considering selling the gun and giving it up as a bad idea,but i persisted and knocked on a few more abit further a field from my home ,i asked about another ten or so farmersand got one who said yes no problem :lol: ,started shooting on his land and after a few weeks asked a few of his neighbouring farms and found that once i mentioned his name and that i had permission on his land there attitudes changed ,i now have 6 farms with permission and have been approached by a few more asking if we would consider going on there land and shoot for them

so dont give in mate ,go and knock on doors ,i know you find it hard to speak to strangers but go with the attitude that they can only say no and thats the worst that can happen,i also fouun if you can find out the farmers name before you knock and ask for him by name ,then introduce yourself,shake his hand then tell him what your offering,also if you are a member of basc ect make sure you tell him ,if not join it all helps in the cause

hope it help :lol::lol::lol:

like you say once you know one , you soon get to know a lot.

id second the 'get his name first '

also try asking if they know of a neibough who may have shooting groung if you get refused ,

then you can say that 'mr smith , down the road' said you might have shooting ;

then wait for the .. oh you know old smithy !

hope this helps

it took me ages to get the first positive reply after sending 260 letters but the strange thing is once you get the first one the others seem to just start rolling in.i took on another 2 small pieces of land last week and im getting to the situation now where i will have to turn anymore down.a tip that is worth considering is buy yourself a couple of dozen mole traps and offer your services as a mole trapper as well ,i dont know why but farmers seem to hate moles more than pigeons,rabbits rooks crows and anything else you can think of.so stick at it and you will get a shoot in the end.hope that helps a bit.ps i only pay £1.99 each for mole traps so its not a massive investment when you consider the cost of the rest of the gear.
