Si-Bore
Hi guys Does anyone else share a passion for S/S's but perhaps shoot better with an O/U? I am in a dilemma because I started shooting last July with a Beretta 303 semi auto. I quickly became a good shot with it but always liked the feel and look of S/S shotguns. I took the plunge, buying an AYA number 4. I think it handles like a dream, is light, mounts very fast, swings like nothing else and has 26" barrels, perfect for the hide shooting I do lots of. I shoot well with it, more so on closer range, instinctive style shots. On the longer range shots I often wonder if I would be better off with an O/U so I can be more accurate with the lead etc. Especially like the Beretta silver pigeon I tried with the narrow game rib. I could imagine the lead would be easier to guage due to the fine sight plane of the single barrel and narrow rib......... It is something in the back of my mind but whichever road I chose to go down I will probably regret it in some aspect. Now thats off my chest - does anyone else feel similar? Cheers Si
Glenshooter
I'm in a similar position but think, TBH, it's more down to the shooter than the gun. I do find the s/s more "pointable" than an O/U but on the otherhand, not many top clay shots use a s/s!
Si-Bore
There must be a shooting advantage to the single sight plane of the O/U because as you mentioned - all the top clay shooters use them. Cheers Si
mirokujames
i'll jump on this bandwagon.... i adore sXs's but as i mainly shoot clays i use an o/u more often. althoigh when i do take out the sXs i never want to put it down.
Si-Bore
James - I am the same. Even if I am not getting shots off in the field I just enjoy handling it as I fell they are so comfortable and makes me want to pick it up. My semi auto was not as natural or pleasing to handle although I shot well with it. Interesting feedback thanks Si

garyb
I've just picked a S/S up myself Although it Kicks like a Mule.. I love the character of the old thing. I'm planning on using it as my Rainy day & Syndicate gun for the coming season, as I do still have a love of the 20g SP for Pigeon Shooting. Shot clays with it the other day and only dropped 2 or 3 out of 25 so it shoots well too
vole
I use a AYA matador ,its got a very raised rib so not too unlike a o/u sight picture? Wichester 23 a bit like this in principle too.I prefer them to o/u anyday despite being newish to this game. I totally agree mate! Autos are a good option too. I just like the feel and handling of the double barrel, especially in s/s. Balance is so different. anser2
Si just because you like the look of an O\U it doesnt mean you will shoot better with it. 25 years ago I got a lincon O\U after shooting for years with a S\S and it was a big mistake. The gun fitted me well and yet I could not hit a barn door with it. I gave it a whole season to try and get use to it. Finaly one day in late January I was shooting on the Wash in very snowy weather and I had 45 shots for just 1 mallard and 4 wigeon ( and one of those wigeon was not the one I shot at ). The next day I went back to my S\S. During the following 5 days I shot 52 duck and geese for 60 shots with the S\S . On a couple of occasions I have used a O\U when shareing a gun and the result has always been the same .............cant hit a dammed thing. I was out last October staying with friends when out of the blue he suggested a couple of flights. Using his O\U gun I managed a single teal for 20 odd shots at the morning flight . Scrounging a S\S for the evening i scored 4 mallard and 5 wigeon for 11 shots ( and one of those was to finnish off a wounded bird). I do use a 3 1\2 inch semi auto for geese and provided I have steady overhead shots my shooting is not bad , but nowhere as good as with a S\S. Give me a side by side every time as it suits my style of shooting Edited March 24, 2008 by anser2
