mattyb
I dont think you should tar us all with the same brush granted there are alot of wasters out there that cant wait to turn 18 and go on the doll, but i get up and go to work every morning at 8 and have done for the past year and a half, last year i was told by my boss to take my holiday and at most only had couple days off ill. I dont help when some parents sit at home and say "get ya self pair crutches son you wont ever have to work and the goverment will pay you to sit on you arss all day" Sorry rant over Matt
mr lee
no not all of us are like that dont class the minority the magority Go back to my post and re-read it again. I never tarred you all with the same brush and col agreed with what i said. I said the majority were lazy basically. MAJORITY. Not all! there are people out there who are prepared to work for a living but when you break this number down into the different trades that number becomes very diluted and finding that minority out of hundreds of time wasters is an almost impossible task. :o If you look at the total amount of people that train in a trade college/workshop to go onto apprenticeships there are hundreds of them. Yet I would stake money on over 3/4's of them never making it to the end of their apprenticeship. Now when you add into all this the total amount of money a future employer ploughs into a prospective member of staff only to be let down is it any wonder that we are rather hessitant on taking on further trainees/apprentices? Good on you if you are in that minority and I truly hope you stay that way but don't be suprised when we/employers aren't too forthcoming in offering out places when others before you have already messed us about so much and cost us money. :o
starlight32
"Many school leavers focus seems to be on how much they can earn from day one, and how hard they have to work for it, rather than recognising that in the short term their wages are not fantastic but they are being equipped with a skill to give them earning potential through life. " That's it in a nutshell, apart from "how hard they have to work for it", could be better worded as " how little they can do to get it". As you say not all, but certainly the majority. Also Scotland has a different attitude to employment than England, I remember working at Torness power station when it was being built, we were only allowed to work 48 hours per week, the idea being to create employment, companies would employ more people to get the job done. 70 hour weeks were the norm on English sites. They were the good times of new construction in this country...... I long for its return with a new programme of power station builds. Not to interested in anything Torness way anymore though- As the saying goes 'No number 9 bus goes that way for me' Edited April 2, 2008 by starlight32
starlight32
I have a steady flow of apprentices, and it makes me laugh how they come over these days, and also how the industry is now more acceptable to the female gender. A month ago on my last intake I had a female steel erector turn up. If a woman makes it that trade then she will make it anywhere........... Pushkin
Martin still looking for quality machinist's to follow a dream,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Martin, its a few years now since I worked and set machines up in engineering but, in my day - I was one of the best. from ancient "War finish accuracy and control guaranteed" machines to the latest NC borers and lathes, from the finest precision machining lathes for small screw patterns to the largest horizontal or vertical borers - some so large they had gantries around them. If the money is good - and your that desperate - I might just emigrate! What jobs are available and what is the pay like? (Im qualified to METII standard C&G as well!).
