Semi-auto for clays

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I've put in a fair few hours at my local clay ground. I'm no hardened veteran but I average in the 20s!

So far though I've only ever taken my O/U.

I'd like to take my 2+1 when I go this weekend but I'm not sure how it will go down...?

I know that some of the regulars there do bring their autos sometimes. I also know that some of the other members have a quiet grumble every time an auto is seen on the stand. I'm also a bit concerned because none of the other autos I've seen at the clay ground seem to throw the spent cases as FAR or as HARD as mine does... It can be quite violent!

I don't want to make a nuisance of myself.

Any tips?

Should I bother?

Shane

Do it, Me and a mate often take a Hatsun Escort to a clay shooting ground and she has not been the only Hatsun there either, only issue is you cannot just tip and eject your spent rounds in the bins, you have to pick them up, sometimes several yards away in my case. No one has ever grumbled at me, plus the gun is all black so pretty obvious to the classic gun users.

Thanks guys!

And sorry Cranfield! I tried a search but obviously didn't search for the right terms  doh!

What do you mean by a breech flag? You mean leaving the bolt back / reciever open between stands?

Thanks!

Shane

little orange flag you put in the breech which sticks out to clearly show the gun is empty - used obviously because o/u or s/s can be broken to demonstrate this. I take my 391 with me all the time, dont have a flag i just sleeve it betweeen stands, only comes out when i'm ready to shoot. (steady on)

A brief summation is that if you only use two cartridges, a breech flag, pick up your empties (if safe to do so) and totally ignore everyone around you, it is OK.

Bang on.

Harpo, If you're safe and courteous then what's the problem? I see people every week with over & unders eject carts on the floor and never pick them up! Persoanlyy i don't know if i could handle having to root around for the empties, but that's me being lazy and not being a snob!

Go for it, and if they have a quiet grumble about your semi then quietly tell them to stick it up their ****!

Yawns.

Waiting for the anecdote about a rough and ready but honest and straight shooting semi auto owner being hassled by the expensive gun totting toffs at the local clay ground.

Fight the power and power to the people and all that

Seriously though, do whatever you want that is allowed at the ground and safe. My advice, get a pump action.

Harpo,

Sod the O/U toffs mate. I use my Browning Gold Hunter in Camo all the time, its like every other gun, point in the right direction, pull trigger, bang and hopefully you've hit the clay.

My gun throws the empties some distance, but if unsafe to pick up I leave them there. I shoot very well with it now, and only get looks of envy. As others have said, only put two cartridges in, sleeve gun between stands but most of all take it and enjoy.

90% of my shooting is clays these days, and I dont even own a bloody O/U  Its either my black Benelli M2 or occasionally my black Mossberg 500 pump action. I dont get any complaints, there's quite a few single barrelled guns where I shoot anyway.
