My 1st Roe Buck

I went out yesterday with a mate to one of my permissions, with the intention of getting myself a roe buck and a fox or two later. The weather was great, a mild wind blowing towards us as we walked through the fields.

There were plenty of slots and we could see where the deer had been laying up in some of the long grass.

We walked through three fields and headed towards a place where we often see deer/fox. As we were walking, my mate said to me, "There's a fox in front of us at about 60 yards". We stopped and he looked through his binocular's to see that it was indeed a Roe buck. The sticks were set up and I looked through my scope to just make out the roe's head and part of his neck, sticking up from the foot high grass. My rifle is sighted in at 120 yards, so I placed the cross hairs on his neck. I fired and we could hear the slap. A Roe doe got up and ran for about 10 yards. She stopped for about a minute and then ran off down the field. We approached the buck, and he was laying flat out and still kicking. I could see that there was still eye movement, so another shot placed at the side of his neck quickly dispatched him.

A nice size buck was mine, my first. My mate estimated that he was probably about two years old. His summer coat was almost through.

I wish I could write that I had stalked this buck for 100's of yards and that I placed a perfectly aimed shot at the heart/lung area, but at the end of the day, I got one. I'm now looking forward to seeing it cooking in the oven.

PS. The gun was empty when the photo was taken!

Game Boy, occurrences, as you stated, are few and far between. And yes, there is a giant leap moving up the ladder and using a centrefire. It's a completely different ballgame.

The plus side of centrefire, and there are many, far too many to mention on this forum, for me, is that I can humanely kill a fox at up to 200 yards+

Deer are also taken at 150 yards.

My mate had a rimfire for years, and I persuaded him to apply and get a centrefire. He hasn't looked back. I still use my rimfires regulary, both .22 and .17 HMR.
