My personal choice was a .243 but it depends exactly what you want to shoot. are you looking for a foxing rifle that you can shoot the odd smaller deer with, or a deer rifle that you can shoot the occasional fox with. What sort of deer are you going to be shooting? I bought the rifle for foxes up to roe deer, with the occasional larger deer.

ye i was thinking .243 it will mainly be for foxing but i will get the chance at shooting a few roe muntys and reds in Scotland

The few reds that i have shot have all been with a .243. I am no expert, and although it may be pushing the limits, it seems to do the job. For the smaller deer and foxes i like the .243. The only other rifles I have used are .25-06 and .308, both for roe. I prefer shooting the .243.

If you want both put in for both. I doubt they would give you one and not the other. and wait for some more replies because there are alot of people on here that will be able to give better advice. especially if you want two rifles. I wouldnt have thought .243 and .308 was the best combo.

Make sure you fill all your slots, then you can swap free of charge later on. The most they can do is knock you back on a few if you dont have good reason. Of course, you dont have to buy them all, you have 5 years before renewal.

Try :

.17hmr - vermin/pest bolt action, longer range.

.22 - bolt action vermin/pest, with lamp set up for night work, plus you can eat what you shoot without it being destroyed.

.223 - fox, small deer, roe in scotland.

.243 - roe in england and larger deer.

.308 - larger deer, and good for beating the wind.

Simliar to my request, but you need to show why the need for each is unique and cannot be satisfied with one of the others you asked for. I explained in wiritng with the application why I needed each.

I'm also in club so I asked for 357 lever action so I could practice with larger calibres indoors.

I asked for 2 x .22, they queried why two of the same calibre, and I said I wanted one with a permanent lamp/scope set up and they said OK.

Point them to your web site Russ and they can see its a professional requirement.

my personal choice would

243 for foxes and deer upto fallow sika and red hinds

then a 30-06 for falllow bucks ,sika and red stags also good for boar (except in france ) and a top gun in africa the only reason i don't recommend the 308 as they are the same size case as a 243 but a bigger head , sometimes a mistake can be made in haste and a mix up between 243 and 308 may occur , open licence first ticket near impossible

get your DSC1 it will open doors

Luck doesn't come into it. Russ, how well do you know GOD? You'll need divine intervention. :good: :good: :hmm:

Something along the lines of a 257 Roberts would be perfect, not to big on foxes with the smaller pills and will do the job on red's with the heaver pills, any of the other 1/4 bores would e good too. The 6.5X55 and 260rem are an even better choice, with the 100n Nosler there flat shooting and not to much over kill on foxes and with a 130gn Accubond they will drop any deer that your likely to see with authority.

I have used a 260rem in that role for years, 100's of foxes, Goats and dozens of Deer (Fallow and Red) have fallen to it.

hehehe i can only try but i am on good trems with the woman who dose the fac's in leeds so who knows if i dont ask i dont get

She's only an enquiry officer who visits and goes through a predetermined list that is then taken to Laburnum Road for processing. That's her job done. The licensing manager makes the decisions which are based on the Force policies. That's where your problems will start. he's new, he's keen, he's ex-RAF and goes by the book (or at least his version of it). BASC have had more complaints about West Yorks this last year than they have had in previous years.

right well i can only ask

but im going to ask for them to use a target as well as for vermin and deer so as far as i am awer they can not tern one down for target if you are a member of a relivent club

They can turn down anything they want Russ but you're definitely on safer ground applying as a club member. Bear in mind you'll have to serve a probation period before you can apply for an FAC for target shooting and this is where you may get some good advice from your local enquiry officer.

If you explain that you want rifles for vermin shooting but you are also a member of a club (get one joined if you're not a member already) they may look at shortening or waiving the probation period. Bear in mind that applicants for FAC's for vermin shooting don't have the probation bit to go through although they seem to be pushing this mentor thingy.

Also provide them with written permission for shooting on land that you know is already cleared. It will save them a job and it may help you.

I'd carry on dreaming about an open ticket though. It ain't gonna happen (not in west Yorks anyway)

What was their reason for not giving you a centrefire? I assume you had permission somewhere to use one.

Ring your FEO Russ. He or she will know if the land has been 'walked' by an FEO in the past. My 360 acre permission wasnt on their computer, so he had to walk it with me during my FAC application. Its now on thier system and cleared for all bore size (Happy Days !!). You should find that most land is on their system.

Cheers
