Cranfield
I know some members use dial up Internet Service Providers and I need some opinions. My 82 year old mother in law is doing a computer course and I have bought her a PC. She needs access to emails and a certain amount of surfing, so her usage needs are below broadband requirements. If she has dial up, who does the best deals, for a reliable service ? I have Google searched all evening and its a minefield out there. At one point Wannadoo's pay as you go looked good at 1p per minute, until you read the small print and realised that was between 6pm and 8am, the rest of the time its 4p per minute. I would like her to have an "Anytime" option, if its reasonably priced. Thanks for any advice. :yp:
lurcherboy
Cranfield, I know you don't reply to my posts, but at least listen. Do not subscribe to AOL in any way. LB
barrie0
Having had cable for the last couple of years I have not used dial up for a while but these packages don,t seem bad . http://www.onetel.co.uk/index.php/internet...rvice_providers My father uses bt dial up (slow) and he tried tesco dial up (no good) It seems the price of dial up is increasing ,probably to push broadband more+more ,good luck with your choice . Although an adsl website , there is a list of service providers to browse through here http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/summarylist.asp :yp:
Cranfield
barrieO, thanks for that list. Your comment that tesco are no good has floored me, they were favourites up until then. :yp: lurcherboy, be assured, I don't deliberately ignore your posts, I'm sure I have responded to some. I got your signal on AOL loud and clear. :yp:
barrie0
Well that was his opinion of them as it would always disconnect ,slow speed etc ,etc , if you read reviews for tesco broadband as well they are getting slagged off about that service as well , as they have oversubscribed and dont have the equipment to back up the amount of users they have now . When I did use dial up I was with bt then freeserve then blueyonder(telewest) both the latter were good but blueyonder was cheaper . :yp:
ProteuS
hi i would seriously consider eclipse www.eclipse.co.uk , i am a huge fan of eclipse, we have our adsl with them at uni, a few others i know i have recommended eclipse to and they are using them trouble free, and my girlfriend lives in the country so cant get adsl and she changed her dialup from bt to eclipse, they have the advantage of if you have any problems you can speak to someone british who is usually very helpfull, not that there are many problems, and they tend to be reasonably priced aswell, eclipse webby ^^ at least have a look and see p.s. avoid a oh hell at all costs:D /edit

Guest Mr Pieman
I use BT Broadband. Before that I had a BT Anytime package that was very reasonable. All day/night access and free phone calls all weekend and 6pm to 8am weekdays. All the details are no www.BT.com PP

Jonnyni
Cranfield, The best advise from Barrio is to take some time to read through the ADSL Guide Website and find the best deal from all the ADSL ISPs on there. Its a great website that gives user based input to get the comparison charts. Your gran wil not need full 'unrestricted' broadband but should be able to get a very good 'capped' service from one of the ISPs. Make the internet easy for her to navigate forget dial-up thats my advise. :yp: P.S. forget the big boys (ISPs) they have too much of a market share and don't provide as good a service. Do the comparison guide and see for yourself.
eugene molloy
LB hates AOL; well I'm not in love with it either, but for an elderly lady poking around on the internet for the first time I reccomend it in Version 9. It does have some strong positive points viz.... Unlimited dial up £14.99 per month Lots of free web space included, plenty of room for several home grown websites, available for private and business use. Integrated web browser and mail client, very simple to use, bypasses IE which is a rubbish product IMO. Good help set up on and off line (used to poor, now much improved) Built in pop-up stopper and spam basher (works very well, but ver. 9 only) Very little dropping off line, almost non existent now. Stable software, nothing much goes wrong. Regards Eug
Browning
Cranfield, I use, and have done for a long time, Virgin.net. Never had any problems with them, it costs me £12.49 per month, for unlimited use, and when I'm working from home I'm permanently connected from 8am until 7pm. Country_est
Following on with Browning I had the virgin.net free service (pay as you go). Ok if just connecting and downloading mails ect. Have now moved on to virgin ADSL and am quite happy with it.
