What are your thoughts on the ultimate fighting championships?

I personally enjoy watching it as I train in both Mixed Martial Arts and Wing Chun.

But the subject always seems to cause a high level of debate...

I think its a bit mad to be honest, it doesnt seem to be a particular form of martial art but many combined, can be quite entertaining.

I have trained with Bob Spore, he is ex SAS, and teaches self offense rather then self defense, its amazing, after it i now feel 500% more confident in my capabilities i didnt even know existed, i have boxed for 4 years when i was in school and that didnt give me confidence as its all about brawn rather than brains.

Bob teaches how to read situation's and how to act accordingly, how to take people down with one single blow, how to keep them down when they are down, i have done this during the training to people who are over 6 feet tall and weigh 16+ stone, they drop like babies, im only 5"10 @ just under 12 stone, i dont fear anyone anymore, it really gives that much confidence, because i know in any threatening situation, i can act fast to eliminate the treat to protect myself, this is because the adrennaline doesnt get flowing and i can keep a cool head whilst the would be assailant thinks he is in control when really the table is facing the other way round.

Ice,

That sounds superb - very similar to the Wing Chun I do. It is a real confidence booster to know you can easily handle someone twice your size in a sticky situation if worst comes to the worse. Take a look at Samuel Kwok on you tube he runs some great seminars and is the international Wing Chun face so to speak.

I think UFC is great and enjoy TUF even. Loved it when Mr Couture beat Tim Silvia and was gutted when Matt Hughes got toppled. I think it fills the void left by boxing on tv. BJ Penn ,Forrest Griffin very entertaining.

I did a few years kickboxing, sadly only when I got in my 40,s and quit as my elbows are affected which could have ruined my fishing and shooting. I would have liked to have tried MMA when younger. I think!

They dont believe a bit ,or even a pool of blood should stop a fight do they?

Thar SAS thing sounds good. Anything near Manchester like that?

i used to train in MMA (mixed martial arts) and apart from breaking my thumb i found it informative, hugely unviolent as most of the time you spend writhing around on the ground trying to gain a dominant position and is only portrayed as a vile bloodsport as the boxing fraternity seem to afraid of loosing their spot as the no.1 combat sport. There are also vast amounts of rules involved in the proper sanctioned section and Medically because the athletes get hit less before they get KO'd or submit the injuries sustained are less than in Boxing where the padded gloves leads to repeated hits to the head and brain trauma occurs. But as we now see the popularity is beating boxing and with purses getting bigger for professional fighters this sport will only continue to grow. it also uses a combination of martial arts to conquer your oponent its not just about brute force and those who can stand and throw with each other.

The general idea is not to let a fight get to the floor as basically once this happens the strongest will win 90% of the time, this is where being able and confident to take someone down in a split second comes in at a massive advantage, then once they are on the ground and you are still on your feet, chance is that you will not need to react anymore to the threat as the once threat is no longer a threat.

Plus if a fight ends up on the ground and there is more than one of them, then its not going to be good news from your point of view, with the confidence boost you will not back down from any conforntation, this sign of massive confidence is 70% of the time enough to get any would be assailant to back down....

There are ofter semina's on in manchester, google it im sure you will find something that will be of interest...

Best of luck in finding something...

I thinks it great stuff to be honest and if you watch alot maybe sometimes some of the techniques could come to your rescue whenever required. I love the UFC personally. That chap off Mind, Body and Kick-*** Moves was pretty good as well, very imformative. Especially wih the 'Chee' thing. I've tried it, the extra power you can generate from that technique is amazing.

You must of had a **** trainer then if you were taught brawn rather than brains!!!

No offence to yourself

That's fighting talk.

There's only one way to resolve this now...................

Say it to his face

And be prepaired to run like the wind, if i know someone is a boxer, or if i am a boxer, does that mean i should box on the street?:P? i dont think so, therefore any boxer tries it on the street, he will wake up in bed, i can personally guarantee that!!!

Blimey mate.... calm down! anyone who has seriously boxed will know all about being able to read your opponent, work out his weaknesses etc, boxing ''THE SPORT'' is very much brains over brawn as are most martial arts. I never mentioned street fighting......

Did kickboxing in my teens before i discovered alcohol and ciggies. It's not the most impressive 'martial art' by any stretch, defensive moves seemed to consist of kicking the **** out of your opponent before they kicked the **** out of you. Fun? Not so sure, i used to pay for privilege, must have had the crapped kicked out of so many times i still thought it was a good idea. Found i did a better job drinking so took that up 5 days a week instead. Ah, those were the days!
