Cosd
We called the farmer to say we're going down to the shoot this weekend and he told us that there is quite a lot of laid barley especially around the edges of the fields ( land is aprox 300 acres). We haven't been able to go there for four weeks and the land is not shot by any other people. Looking at the threads on the forum this seems to be where the pigeons are at. Since this is our first year shooting we haven't shot laid Barley before and have only seen pigeons in very small numbers up until now; When we started the wheat was about 3 or 4 inches tall. There are three of us, how should we set up? Should we sit on seperate fields or closer together? Also what equipment should we take, we have decoys, two bouncers and two magnets... Really excited to hopefully see some real action, our biggest bag so far has been about a dozen pigeons as they haven't been feeding on our fields and there have been no flight lines there either. I can't wait!!!!!!

Zapp
Hardly any laid barley in my area, hoping some of mine goes soon. As Magman said, split up because if there are several laid patches then the bird will pile in all over the place. Take a bit of time to establish the flightlines if the birds are there, and you could be in for a good day! ZB
Catamong
Good advice from Zapp there, you MUST watch the field first and find out where the birds are feeding. Do not just set up at any old spot that's convenient for you and hope the birds will come to you, because they won't. ALWAYS use the magnet with 2 dead birds, place it no further than about 25 yards from your hide. This time of year birds feed harder later in the day, so you've plenty of time to do a proper recce, so no excuses, we all expect to hear about your first 100 + day. Cat. Zapp
I forgot to mention that if you are going to split and shoot the same field, make VERY sure that there is NO WAY that you can accidentally fire onto each others hide site. At this time of year over laid barley the shooting can get very hectic, and when the blood is up and the birds are bombing in tragic things can occur. ONLY careful choice of hide site and pre planning can be relied on, so please - take no chances. Take a mobile each and make it a rule to call whenever you are leaving your hide. All the best, cant wait to hear how it goes! ZB
JonnyR
Hi, The guys who shot 406 had 2 hides at opposite ends of the field. Firstly this is safe and secondly to keep the birds moving. They both had magnets and deeks. One had more hooting that the other I think because the latter was under a flightline. Check it out first. They started at 2 and finished at 8 pm so I agree that they are feeding late. Probably also feeding early too and then resting up in the middle of the day. I went down yesterday and shot the same field with no hide, no deeks and no magnet and shot 6 in 1 hour. Read into that what you will. ;-). I reckon a lot of it depends on what else is on offer in the vicinity. As one old shooter said to me. "when it comes to pigeon shooting you don't need the best restaurant in the world, just better then everyone else's in the area" if that makes sense. Good luck and keep your head on the stock. Jonny.
