shooper
Hey all, Not been on for a very long time, PC problems........ Anyhow there don't seem to be many birds within 30 miles of plymouth? I saw a few Torpoint way & a friend of mine has had a few Launceston way. What do you know? Cheers

tomtom
I have never seen the flocks down here which people seem to encounter up country. There are a few about though.
Teal
I think in the west country you get seasonal influxes of birds from elsewhere. Why there is not a larger number of permanently resident woodpigeon I am not sure. Could it be that less of the land is in arable production than other parts of the country. Poacher
Could it be that less of the land is in arable production than other parts of the country. in a nutshell, yes according to the 2001 census Note: 1st number is Agricultural land as a % of total land area 2nd number is arable land as a % of agricultural land United Kingdom 67.8 39.1 North East 66.4 35.6 North West 62.4 24.6 Yorkshire 68.4 58.5 East Midlands 75.8 73.6 West Midlands 70.3 54.9 Eastern 71.4 86.6 London 7.9 54.2 South East 57.3 64.1 South West 72.7 45.3 Wales 67.0 13.5 Scotland 67.1 18.6 Northern Ireland 74.2 18.7 Possibly my most geeky response ever on a PW thread Edited July 9, 2008 by Poacher

shooper
Good point Tomtom, amyhow as it happened the birds in the Lunceston area were a bit thin on the barley. The morning we were going I wanted to pop in see a few other farmers I had permission on so called in & had a look arounde. Lost of wheat, however a farm nearby next to where I shot my PB 32 had a stack of birds on so I was turned away last year but tried again & got in! I also got some more land to shoot on & the farmer would give me ammo............. Result, my mate turned up we checked out where I saw the birds moving & was keen. We set up 1330 & by 2030 we had picked up 90 woodies & 6 rooks. I had 40 so my PB just got stretched, great fun & hope to return before it gets combined. I hope you get some shooting in. shooper
Sundodger, I haven't got any land over there yet but have an eye on Jennycliff, have you got permission out there? I have high hopes of a field out Brentor way & there is a stack of wheat I have permision to shoot over lifton way. Went out there today on laid barley but the birds have moved on & I couldn't see where. Loks like Scout has some ground out that way too, have an invite to go Launceston way tomorrow. That or fishing! Keep in touch & shout if you need a body. cheers
