Salop Matt
Hay Folks just a quick one to ask all fishers to account for there hooks before leaving there pegs, its not hard to do and i was always taught to do it ! The reason behind this is yesterday about 5:30 Mrs SS was out walking our Bryn (a cairn terrier) she was walking him on a route walked by many dogs on a daily basis which goes down one side of a large pool. All of a sudden he yelped and went vertical, and started wimpering and scratching his his paw on his face ! Someone had discarded on the footpath a size 4 / 6 hook still atached to a nylon chord trace and half meter of line behind it ! The hook passed through his Metacarpal Pad ( the big central one) and lodged in, it caused the little fellow alot of pain and distress, not to mention his mommy was besides herself with worry ! Vets cost was £175 for 2 hours of treatment, inc a full sedation and anasthetic So please please look after your hooks and be carefull with the disposal of them ! Needless to say am on the hunt for a way to complain to the relevent authority about the sloppy discarding of hooks and the impact it can have ! I am quite awear its likely to fall on def ears with the powers that be but still worth a shot.
Dunkield
I am glad he is all sorted, just as at school it is the minority that give the rest of fishers a bad name with litter etc. I usally come home with more line than I start off with the amount I pick up along the banks/carpark etc

Mrs Sweepy
I always remember going for a walk along the local river. A few years back .And finding a elderly gentleman trying to console His two very young grandsons . While trying to deal with a very distressed lab.Which had one of these hooks in its mouth .The line had got wraped round it legs somehow. The poor man was close to tears himself. And all one of the little lads kept saying was .Please granddad dont let him die. You do your best to help . But i felt so helpless . And it is something that will haunt me for years to come . What make people so thoughtless . Ater all how long do it take to tidy up behind themselfs. The other thing a lot of fishermen (not all)seen to like leaving behind round the local rivers anyway .Are bottle full of ****. Pee if you must .But whats the point of bottling it. xxxxsuzy
Ferret Master
I've had a few aggressive rows over the years while fishing with fellow anglers who have total disregard to the damage and pollution they are causing by lobbing tins, glass and plastic bottles, long strands of line, hooks and even smaller damaged terminal tackle onto the ground or in the hedge. I am forever being reminded that this is not the way forward considering my size and the fact rivers and lakes are wet cold places... Salop Matt
Its so disappointing after I have always been so carefull that this has happend to our dog ! Mrs SS is really upset and is on some what of a mission, knowing that the local council are fed up with this particular pool for ill parking, illeagal fishing etc she has contacted the local paper who were very interested in the story. They took some details and have said they will be in touch, so maybe little Bryn may make the papers yet !

alexm
I've had a few aggressive rows over the years while fishing with fellow anglers who have total disregard to the damage and pollution they are causing by lobbing tins, glass and plastic bottles, long strands of line, hooks and even smaller damaged terminal tackle onto the ground or in the hedge. I've had a few altercations with litterbug ****** along the Bristol Channel shore too. It's not unusual to come home with half a bin bag full of discarded beer cans, empty bait bags, fishing line, hooks etc. It's so totally unnecessary it beggars belief. If they have that little respect for their surroundings you can imagine how little respect they have for the fish. One scumbag was catching codling and then hurling them back high in the air like lobbing a grenade so they were basically hitting the water from 50 feet and dying with the impact. The tide was then carrying them past where we were fishing. When I went and asked him if he'd like to be reported for killing and discarding undersized fish I was treated to a foul mouthed tirade. I took his photo and told him I'd send it to DEFRA and he packed up sharpish and left, leaving all his rubbish behind for us to pick up. The annoying thing is that these scum care so little about the sport that when the government end up producing ill-thought out legislation to control their behaviour these people will either evade the new measures or just move onto something else leaving the people who are really passionate about the sport to pick up the pieces and jump through all the new legal hoops! The ####s that discard hooks and nylon are not the type to listen to you. and just for the record a 4/6 is not a big hook in course fishing ....if you are as already mention....carp fishing. if it was tied directly to nylon with no trace and swivel it was probably polish or bosnian in origin Edited August 11, 2008 by Evil Elvis

Thats the answer Pet Insurance. Dimwit, It doesn't matter what the dog suffers as long as you are insured.

Salop Matt
The pool is well known for carp and there are alot of polish people around here these days, i wasnt going to point a finger but it was the thought i had. It was a size 4/6 barbed hook on a 2ft trace of what i guess to be 20 / 25 lb (breaking strein) line which was tied to a thin gray nylon line ! Looked like a setup for carp, probobly a handline of some kind ! A photographer from the local paper has been round to take a couple of pic`s of him and his mom, should be in tonights paper. It will be worth it if 1 less person walks there dog there or one poor practising fisher is more careful .
rabbithunter2008
The poles are giving a bad name to the sport as well as some dumb people. No body in the right mind would drop any thing in country side. Hope all ok with your dog.

Spaniel
Like with everything there is always someone cocking it up for others. I am very carefull that i take all my litter plus used tackle home with me after every outing, plus to be honest i stay away from rivers with the dogs, which i know maybe good fishing spots just incase there are hooks left around..you have to be carefull. I have walked along the Avon at Keynsham to see loads of beer cans where someone as been night fishing just left on the bank...what a mess and a complete disregard for others who also want to fish. And on the matter of sea fishing what about those idiots who think it is great to fill up bin liners with Mackeral....i keep approx 6 to eat and put the rest back.. Hope the dog is ok Cheers
