Green Laning... extreme style!

Had a bit of fun last week, myself and some friends decided to go offroading in the rain, at a secret location somewhere in the borders on private land. We decided to explore some of forestry trails on the estate. With evening closing in fairly fast and the rain bucketing down it seemed perfect.

We had a range rover classic 3.9 V8 with AT tyres, and a Defender 110 with a custom 300TDi with variable geo turbo for insane torque! That was fitted with proper mud terrain tyres and a winch (which didn't work lol!)

Setting off with me as the passenger in the Rangey, (I like to ride in comfort) and two in the 110 the convey headed off into the hills. We had a rough idea of the trails as it was the venue for the Muddy Truckers competition a few years ago. Since then it had got quite overgrown. One of the chaps was a tree feller who worked on the estate so we were allow to clear trees and brush.

I will explain as we drive along:

All shiney and ready to go:

We then encountered a fallen tree about half a mile up the grassy trail:

After saying some choice words (especially as they had forgotten a chainsaw!) they decided to turn around with the rangy going first:

Perhaps not such a good idea as it was really squishy and the rangy sank like a stone:

After around an hour and a half of using ropes and pulleys they got the range rover out of the mud, during which time I had chopped through the tree with a Khukuri (darn amazing knives) and we continued up the trail. We came across another fallen tree which was dea so we cleared the brush off it and used that to make a road through the mud.

The trail ran out so we turned around and prepared to head back down again:

We then went up another trail that was so insanely steep and slippery that you could not walk all of it! It was a shale/mud surface that was very slidey!!!!!!

At the top:

I can't post the rest of the pics with the 110 until I get the go ahead, its a suprise for someone

At the end it was dark and very wet....

An excellent place to go, probably not go back there for a while, there is loads more places in the woods to try yet!

Here's a tip: if you are offroading, make sure your insurance covers it. Both vehicles had offroading insurance cover which is jolly important if you roll it off a cliff!! Also never do it on your own, seeing how easily the range rovering turning round went wrong having two trucks is essential. Also a spade and some sort of machete or saw. Lots of ropes, strops, shackles, and pulleys are also essential.

Well, its was good fun, no damage to the vehicles apart from a 1" thick branch busting through the underside of the fron wheel arche on the range rover.

Cheers, Sam

Looks good!!!

The hubs on my Nissan Terrano blew a few weeks ago so i cant do any offroading for a while, the son of a farmer we shoot for was driving us around the fields in it, using 4L due to the mud and slippery streames, on the last field with out me noticing he put it back into 2WD and drove off up the field without reversing back :)

Nothing happened as we were still only doing 5 - 10mph however when we had finished we droped him off, i got in the drivers seat, and pulled out onto the main road, accelerated up to around 30 - 40 mph and zzzzzzzzzzzzz bang!!!

Hobbled home, stripped the front hubs the next morning and caput, their shot to bits :)

stripped the moving parts out from them for now until i get some new ones, cheapest i can find is 80 quid each :good:

Didnt say anything to the farmer as i dont want to loose the land as its bunny heaven (for me anyway, not so much the bunnies)

So if you know anyone that is scraping a Terrano ill have the hubs lol!!

Good write up and pics, enjoyed reading that :good:

Just one query - in the 6th pic it looks like the 110 has no petrol, or was the gauge not working?

Guess but i reckon the ignition was off while the other sorted itself off.

I have heard that this off roading lark is the cheapest form of motorsport to take up, even at organised events. Looks like fun but i'm not so sure i've got the patience to dig a car out for hour & half.

And as for damage, i have a hole the size of Canada in my sill, with MartinCavie in my car i hit a small rut and the road wanted to work it way through the underside of my car, and that was just on the way to a clay ground.

EDIT: To say, yeah the engine might have been switched off numbnuts. :)

Cheers chaps! Yup it was jolly good fun!

The picture taken in the 110 was with the engine off, its not my truck, they were busy fixing up some more pulleys.

Once they get that darned winch fixed we could have done the recovery in about half an hour instead!

I really like the third and forth pic from bottom, the ones with the lights on. I like to go to Gallowway forest but no offroading as I aint got my own 4x4 yet.

So i'm guessing you're a member of the Land Rover owners club too? :good:

No I drive a Land Rover Defender 110 for my work, I work in a different district to the galloway one so cant take it there. But I can in my wee little car.
