So, 2 questions.

Which section would you suggest it was pinned in? (and don't say 'all')

And who has ever read a pinned topic?

How about a faq on the submenu at the top - next to the House Rules say?. This would then be available across the forums, and whilst I accept it doesn't fully address your second point, if people are directed to the faq to correct a problem they are encountering they may linger there to scan the other answers. In my experience people are slightly more inclined to read a faq than a sticky, and find them less intimidating than the 'Help'. Just an idea.

100% in agreement with Stuart. There is zero, that's the big fat version, point in pinning that topic OR making it FAQ. A small minority of people will read those, ever, on ANY site. To be blunt, it's a waste of time and small effort which won't solve anything.

For example, which is better a .22lr or HMR?

Who uses the search function for finding it out?

No one.

It's always a new topic.

Always.

People are like that, instant gratification and attention is more attractive than research and finding out the thing yourself.

The only benefit to pinning, is that you can just refer people to the pinned topic that they haven't read.

It takes almost as long to do that as it does to type the answer out again, and too many pinned topics make the place look untidy IMHO.

Look at the posts in the Gianing Shoting permission section for perfect examples (the ones that haven't been deleted anyway  )
