Webley & Scott vs Hatsan Escory

I looked at both last week as i was after a semi.

The Webley possibly felt a little lighter, but in essence-they're almost identical. To be honest,if i'd shut my eyes while holding them i bet i'd never know which was which.I was however swayed by price-the Webley in black synthetic was £425 while the Escort £314 so guess which i bought... :hmm:

Cant vouch for the Webley, but i've already stripped my Escort apart and its supprisingly easy to do! :good:

The man in the RFD by me told me that the escort are a big problem and are constantly being brought back  although some of the reviews here are saying there ok so I dont know what to tell you really mate.

Anyone know how much a Benelli is ? lol  Thats the semi auto shotgun I'm saving up for.

I have an Escort in black synthetic that I use for all sorts but mainly wildfowling with 3" steel loads.

It has never jammed on me and has even cycled well on a clay shoot with Hull 24gr comp-x's!!!!

It's very easy to strip and clean, seems robust, steel shot proof and it cost me 280 brand new with 5 chokes and 3 year warranty! Ok, benellis and berettas are great but look at the prices! I've had no issues whatsoever yet and it's great once it's all muddy and wet because I'm not panicking about getting my super expensive gun dirty.

It depends how much you will use it.

The cartridge insertion setup for the Hatsan is fiddly and both the Hatsan and Webley are built to a price.

I would go for a second hand Beretta semi. The AL391 (and variants) is the benchmark for semi autos.

Which brings me back to where I started - if you won't use it much then get something cheap that will do. If you are going to use it a lot then you might as well get something half tidy and say a decent second hand AL391.

In addition to my post last night.

This morning i took the Escort out purely to make sure it cycled correctly as its brand new-im shooting clays tommorrow and didnt want any hiccups.I stuck an entire box of 28g and nine 32g cartridges with no problems at all.I was literally loading-firing-loading-firing until the whole box was gone.

It still gets my vote.

I had a problem with my Escort 3in with light strikes on primers. Happened twice, went back twice, Edgar bros sent a courier to the rfd to pick up. The gunsmith at Edgar explained what he had done both times and as above it works a treat now, cycles 28gr happilly too. Just a note though,it does me for some of my rough shooting and tested on clays so not had more than 200 rounds through it.

Thanks for the responses, as ever I guess you get what you pay for but kind of hope the escort was one of those you get just a little bit more than you have spent.

All I had heard was that the escort had very few problems but wondered if Webley were putting the boat out with the new models.

Hello Andy.

Like a lot of sports shooting has its fair share of snobbery and

the Hatsan is deemed the lowest of the low and not to be trusted

by some people, most who have never held one let alone fired one.

They are a cheap gun but they come with a warentee that ensures

you can trust them. I have used one and it fires every thing I put

through it from 21 gramm to heavy doody magnums.

It is an easy gun to maintain and use. The one thing I do not like about

it is the spring clip thing that holds the piston to the actuator bar.

I would have a Hatsan again and they are in my price range. I could

have two Hatsans for the cost of even a cheap secondhand Barretta or

other so called up market gun.

Cheers taz.

I read somewhere that the escorts with the curvy recoil pads are more reiable than the earilier types. (touchwood)

Ok now to give you an idea of how good the hatsan is my uncle had a mini simulated game day back in the summer and all his friends arrived in the porshce cayenne turbos and bmw x5s yeilding their purdys and I was there yeilding my escort,This one chap had a pair of purdys and the fist purdy missfired the first shot and the second, third and so on so he got the 2nd purdy out and got a drum role please of 6/30 and me with my escort not jamming once 27/30.

This goes to show the escort is not to be underestimated :good:

The only thing my escort wont fire is 65mm but it WILL fire 21grm 67mm :good:

Mines been a very good gun, i had the same prob as vole 21 to start with, edgars sorted it out , since its been perfect, they are constantly updating them with new parts so the newer ones have probably ironed out the probs, ive got a few of the later parts fitted in mine to update it, i think the main problem with them, which is also the main reason they get sent back to edgars with fualts is, that they are cheap, and people tend to treat them like ****, covered in mud/water never cleaned/oiled ect, even a beretta would have probs sooner or later treated this way, edgars said that more times than any other reason this is why they play up, and when cleaned they work fine.

Whats considered a small/light cart then ? I fire mainly 32 gram and just got 4 boxes of 30 gram. Looking to get a semi, what ones wont they work with and whats the advantages / disadvantages of a lighter load ?

They will handle 28g's all day and mine will even fire 21g's but

like all things in life it does come down to size. The longer the

better :D . Mine cycles 65mm with about

1 jam ever 100. 67mm and longer cycles all day.

Cheers taz.
