Whitebridges
Go for the Over and under first. You can always save up and but a semi later.
Chard
Get an O/U no doubt about it. I'd rather have a pump than a semi. Despite what people will tell you, semis jam, right when you don't want them to. People will tell you they've shot all their lives with a semi and it never jammed once. Funny how it happens for the first time as soon as they shoot in front of me They do take a bit more cleaning than an O/U, they're slower to load, whatever the rambos tell you and there's more to go wrong. Ignore the stuff about being frowned upon at clay grounds if you have a semi, I've never seen that. Plenty of people use semis for clays (for some reason), especially "proper" clays - sporting I believe they're not too popular at DTL shoots, because they flirt spent cartridges into the earhole of the bloke next to you, but then again, breathing isn't popular at DTL either

Plenty of people use semis for clays (for some reason), especially "proper" clays - sporting I've been asked not to use a semi at a clay shoot as people are nervous about having un-broken guns about. You used to be able to get dummy cartridge thingys with a ribbon attached to show the gun was unloaded, can you still get them? Immaterial on my Remington as you couldn't lock the breech open anyway. Get an O/U for all the other reasons already stated.
Imperfection
Try them both and see which you get on best with cos everyone is different.I've used S/S,O/U and pumps over the years, but when i recently got my own-i opted for a semi and still dont regret it. I was out this morning clay busting,it fired 200 cartridges (a friend was using it too as his O/U is in for repair) and i got my first jam,but this was on second to last trap and gun was very hot by then.Despite this,i still regard its reliability as very good cos it'd fired atleast 180 cartridges by time this happened and i guess we never gave it sufficent time to cool down.Got home, did a full disassembled thorough clean and oiling which took me 45 minutes so not excally a long time! I still dont agree about them being slow to reload-perhaps if you've got rabbit paws!
urikastu
I've never had a Beretta semi jam, if ever it did it would be inferior cartidges! I strip it down and clean it after every shoot. One thing I will say I've used o/u and semi, I bought a semi. Once you buy a semi you don't regret it, my nephew bought a o/u then a beretta silver pigeon but eventualy bought a semi, Now thats all he uses. The urika I've got when I bring it up, no other gun has felt that perfect, it just feels right. Try as many as you can and pick whats right for you, you'll know when it feels right
throdgrain
I did this question when I started shooting shotguns years ago. In my heart I new I wanted a semi-auto but I listening to all the stuff on the forums and bought an O/U. 6 months later I realised I couldnt stand the bloody thing and bought a Mossberg 500. My clay scores improved considerably, despite what all the advice on here will tell you. I then bought a Benelli M2, and my scores increased some more. A couple of years later I still own both guns the Benelli has has well in excess of 10 000 rounds and the Mossberg a good 7000. They both work perectly, probably better than when they were new. Buy what you like, not what other people like.
njc110381
I found my semi a pain in the butt to reload. It may be because I hadn't got the hang of it, but it felt fiddly! With an O/U you drop the barrels with the right hand whilst getting the shells with the left. The old cases have ejected by the time your loading hand gets to the chambers so you drop the shells in and close it, ready to go. With an auto it's load the chamber, press the button to close it, turn it over and feed the next shell into the mag, then turn the gun back over to shoot it....I just found that a lot to get my head around if I was rushing! Everyone has their preference, and I prefer an O/U or S/S
