webber
For several years my shooting partner and I have conducted our own Boxing day shoot. Quite simle, we just go fao a walk aound the various farms over which we have permission, and hope to get a few shots. This years effort was postponed untill Tuesday. Our first port off call was very heavy underfoot, loads of rabbit signs, but no takers. Got a shot a a single pigeon, and missed in classic style. Having walked around with wellies weighing a ton each (spot the Aled influence), it was good to get back to the car for a brew, and get out of the wind. We then went to another farm, and sat for a while watching a largeish flock of pigeon. We couldnt work out what they were feeding on, but experience told us where they would probably roost. So we decided to leave them and return later. On another farm we were just loading up as a hare ran off like the clappers about 15 yards infront of us, a few paces later we discoverd what had moved the hare. We saw a falconer some way off, althougth we realised that we had little chance of any shots, we decided to make our way over towards the falconer. He had a beutifull Harris Hawk, but had been out of luck on the day. We decided to give the other farms a miss, as the groud was so heavy; so we made our way back to the car, and then on to the farm where we had seen the pigeon earlier. We had lunch, and played with some new bins before making our way over to the roost wood. We split up. I was glad to get just into the wood to glean what shelter from the bitter wind that I could. The Deerunter gear certainy was woth every penny. We had a few flurries, but not the bonanza that we had hoped for. I shot 2, my mate shot 4. We retired to the car as the last glimmers of sunlight disapeared. It was far from a perfect day, but we both thorouhly enjoyed the day, and hope to complete our trip on Monday. webber
Pike
Sounds a good one Webber. I took my dad out beating for the first time on Monday and had a great day. The birds were not flying particularly well and the guns were only a shade better than awful but we still had a great laugh. Finished up around seven - just in time to open the port and settle down to Angelina Jolie in a pair of Hot pants throwing herself around a pyramid. Went out beating again on Tuesday on a friends partridge shoot and had a total bag of 150 to include partridge, pheasant, mallard, pochard, rabbit and hare. Then, seeing as I was already wet, cold and tired decided I may aswell go lamping and came home at about four this morning having shot three dog foxes. Now sitting in work contemplating a heard earned knap before I go out shooting ferals later! Pike
lurcherboy
It was beaters day Monday so we all changed places. I never realised how hard it is to beat all day and to think that they do it for pocket money. Sadly, it was a very poor bag, 38 Pheasents and 5 woodies for 163 shots. I will be taking the mickey of them next Saturday, relentlessly. LB
henry d
Be careful LB beaters can make or break a shoot, and obviously the last beating team weren`t up to much

Pike
On the topic of beaters v guns - I was beating on a very prestigeous shoot on Tuesday and at the end of the first drive the shoot captain shouted back through the woods - "well done beaters - they shot like absolute w***ers"! Beaters 1 Guns
kdubya
My shoot was on monday 96 pheasant couple of red legs 3 woodcock no duck? not one came in? stayed over to go bunnie bashing at a place over run with them (scottish borders) and it pi**ed down all night so never got out for them till the next day back to the pheasant ,took two really high fast birds not pricked but hit clean and well, very pleased with the shots, at one point I had perhaps a flush of 20 birds over me and 10 rubber fingers and thumbs trying to reload? cheers Keith
the last engineer
at one point I had perhaps a flush of 20 birds over me and 10 rubber fingers and thumbs trying to reload? cheers Keith dont you just hate that ,seem like the 12 gauge turned into a 20g and the shells wont go in ,you just look skyward and watch all the birds fly by remember doing that back home out in the field of barley (or wheat.long time back) we had shot around 30 birds all afternoon ,decided to pack in and leave ,so guns unloaded shells packed exit the hide and watch a flock of 100 plus pigeons go busting by ,hang head in shame and walk off ....... gutted.
