Decoy patterns

I've shot my premssion around 7 times now, but me and my grandad have only ever shot 5 pigeon and 1 crow between us, and they were just all unlucky. I have about 20 decoys but I just can't attract the pigeons to them. Any tips on patterns>

The pigeons are defnitaly there though.

I vary my pattern often and change it during a session if things get slow.

However, one thing I always try to do, is make sure the birds have to fly within range of the hide, when trying to land at the rear of the decoys.

As pigeons prefer to land facing into the wind, this dictates where the decoys are set.

Which ever field I'm in, the pigeon's always seem to be in the next. What are they feeding on this time of year. I know a good crow flightline so I will get some shooting in, I just would like a few more pigeons added to the bag.

If you were hungry and went to Tescos, the shop window looks good but when you go in, some dodgy looking bloke in designer camo gear starting shooting at you from behind the deli counter .... you remember that there is an Iceland next door ... you will go to Iceland (even if Kerry Katona might be in there!)

The test of your hide/pattern etc is ....... did you have a couple of pigeons come to your deeks, you let off a couple of shots and then that is the end of your shooting day? If it is this .... think of Iceland. If not, maybe there is something else. There is a lot of berry feeding right now.

Generally I think it is getting tougher to get the pigeons to decoy now as they start to group into bigger flocks. A big factor as already mentioned is that they are probably feeding on other crops to the the ones you have. You haven't mentioned the crop you are shooting over. There are many threads on crops and seasons if you look around on the site.

I tend to use horse shoe or L shape patterns, but what works one day may not work the next. Read up on patterns and be prepared to change throughout the day in necessary.

Is it definitely your pattern? What type of decoys are you using? The days are quite bright at the moment, if you are using plastic shell type deeks they might be glistening in the sun which spooks them.

Is your hide right? Do you stand out?

I understand your frustration as I am pretty new too, but it's a real difficult question to answer precisely as there so many factors.

The last and final piece of advice I can give you is that your set up could well be absolutely perfect, but if they don't want to come in then they just won't, simple as that. Remember to do reconisance, you want to go to where the birds are, not wait for the birds to come and find you.

It's all about trying different methods and asking the experienced guys for advice as you have. The more you do it the better your understanding.

Hope this helps

Regards

Cos

I liked how you put it :good:

I use plastic decoys and I have a hide, I'm just never where the pigeons are. I can always see big flocks in the distance but they are never on my feilds.

Do you have any movement in the pattern? ie a rotary or flapper? Can make all the difference :good:

No I don't. My grandad seems to think they wouldn't work :good:

Well, I'm sorry to say your grandad's wrong.

Get yourself a rotary from the UK Shootwarehouse and give it a go.

The only downside is how you're going to carry all of those dead birds back to grandads motor..?? :good:

Some wobbly sticks for your existing decoys and 1 or 2 bouncers allways add good movement too, these are a reasonably cheap addition as well.

Cat's right in saying your grandad's wrong, movement will allways catch the eye of a pigeon from distance much easier than a load of decoys which are stagnent. It also adds for a more realistic effect drawing the woodies in for a closer look at least.

i think they're right mate. i have always tried to be the shooter who does things the old fashioned way, no magnet or flappers just some lightweight decoys and a bouncer. and this works fine a lot of the time, but i never expect huge bags. however...today i finally bit the bullet and ordered myself a lightweight pigeon magnet kit and some flaping decoy things.

YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK DUCKDOG, THAT BEING KEEP AT IT, AND DON'T GIVE UP. EVENTUALLY THE DAY WILL COME WHEN YOU WILL HAVE IT BANG OFF, AND THAT ONE DAY WILL MAKE THE WHOLE YEAR OF EXPERIMENTING WORTHWHILE.

PIGEON SHOOTING IS NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE, AND WHAT WORKS TODAY, MAY NOT WORK TOMORROW. ALL YOU WILL EVER NEED TO KNOW, YOU WILL FIND SOMEWHERE IN THE PIGEON WATCH PAGES, AN EXCELLENT SITE IN MY VIEW, FULL OF TOP ADVICE FROM EXPERIENCED GUNS WHO HAVE BEEN SHOOTING FOR A LONG TIME.

CAN YOU NOT ASK THE OWNER OF THAT OTHER FIELD THEY ARE IN, IF YOU CAN GO AND SHOOT THEM. IF HE SAYS YOU CAN'T, THEN ASK HIM IF YOU CAN PUT SOME LOLLIPOPS IN HIS FIELD FOR THE DAY, TO KEEP THE BIRDS OFF HIS CROP WHILE YOU ARE SHOOTING UP THE ROAD. VERY FEW FARMERS SAY NO TO THAT ONE, AND IF YOU DO IT OFTEN, THEY MAY ADMIRE HOW KEEN YOU ARE RESULTING IN YOU GAINING PERMISSION TO SHOOT THE PLACE.

GAINING LAND TO SHOOT OVER IS HARD, BELIEVE ME I KNOW, AND KEEPING IT IS HARDER STILL AND IF YOU ARE NOT SEEN THERE ON A REGULAR BASIS, YOU WILL LOSE IT TO THE OTHER GUY WHO KEEPS BANGING ON THE FARMERS DOOR, SO PHONE HIM EVERY TIME YOU GO JUST SO HE KNOWS YOU ARE ON THE CASE.

I FIND I SHOOT MORE BIRDS WHEN I GO AFTER THEM IF THEY MOVE OFF AFTER THE FIRST BANG, AND IF THEY ARE NOT COMING DOWN ON MY DECOYS AFTER AN HOUR OR SO, BUT ARE STILL FLYING OVER ME, I MOVE THEM OR CHANGE THE PATTERN. DON'T BE A LAZY SHOOTER, PUT THE EFFORT IN AND YOU WILL GET RESULTS, AND ENJOY IT MORE.

HAPPY HUNTING......

I'VE ANSWERED THIS SO MANY TIMES.

I'M NOT SHOUTING JUST A BIT CHALLENGED IN THE EYE DIVISION AT CLOSE RANGE. I HAVE THE LARGEST FONTS ALLOWED ON THIS PC, AND CAN READ CAPITALS EASIER WITH MY MILK BOTTLE BOTTOM GLASSES, THEREFORE I CAN TYPE A BIT QUICKER, ALSO A CHALLENGE AS MY FINGERS ARE TOO FAT FOR THESE KEYS AND I HIT TWO KEYS AT THE SAME TIME, SO I HAVE TO EDIT SO MANY TIMES BECAUSE OF THIS.

THE UP SIDE IS I CAN SEE A FLY ON A TREE A MILE AWAY, HIT PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING I POINT MY GUN AT AND MY HANDS NEVER GET COLD.
