applied for mine not so long back, i put down both and the fao ask why i needed both :good: i was not sure what to say so i said because i was not sure which would suite my needs best. he said what your trying to say is you want the .22 for stealth and the .17 for long range. and that was it sorted i got both.

like kdubya says, are you in basc. they are very helpfull.they helped me fill in my application

It depends on what and where you are shooting. I agree the two calibres are different beasts - The main pros for both are .22lr (subs are almost silent through a moderated rifle) and .17HMR (awesome long range '125 yards' flat and powerfull vermin round, with less chance of ricochet than the .22).

Personally I went for the multi barrel SAKO quad (and this gave me another reason to ask for both calibres) I asked for .22lr and .17HMR for vermin control and my FEO was happy with that (sensible people in Herts). As suggested you could stipulate, if true, that you need the .22lr for sound sensitive areas (to be respectful to environmental sound issues) and the .17 HMR for vermin at range.

Good luck with it. Personally if you can live with the reletively (in relation to the almost sioent moderated .22 with subs) significant sound signature I would and have gone with the .17HMR. To be honest as I have said before the noise is not that bad down range (@ 80 yards it is no more than a clap.). If you are limited to a permission which requires your shots to be quite then you will have to go with the .22
