steve_b_wales
My good mate Bullet Boy and myself decided to try our luck on one of my permissions this morning. We got there at 6.40am while it was just starting to get light. Someone had built a sort of hide into a bank of earth for, I think, to take photographs of 'wildlife'. We decided to use this to our advantage as the temperature was minus 4 C. I set up a 'Rocking Rabbit' decoy that I purchased from America about a year ago, and placed by it a Johnny Stewart remote control call. We sat in the 'hide' and I got ready my Tikka T3 Lite .243 and 62gr Varmint Grenade bullets. The distance to the decoy was 90 yards. Everything was going well until a large lorry drove across the bottom field to deliver a few ton of chippings for the farmer. What with the noise of the lorry, the 'beep beep' of him reversing and tipping out the chippings, it spoilt our chances of an early morning fox We decided to try our luck around by the barns for some crow, jackdaw, squirrel or magpie. We went to a corner of the yard where there is a very small wood. We were fully camo'd up and I used a hand held caller given to me some time ago. Within minutes, we counted 8 magpies coming towards us in the tops of the trees. Mark (Bullet Boy) shot the 1st one with his 12 G Winchester SX3. A few moments later, I shot the second with my Escort 12G FAC. Two down Many more came close to the call but did not present themselves for safe shots. Still, we were pleased with the result. Not a big bag, but two less vermin about. We intend to try our luck again tomorrow. A cold day out, a good result and good company. Thanks Mark. steve_b_wales
I was given a home made 'shaker' type caller years ago. it's a plastic tube with, I think, dried peas? inside (sealed) It doesn't always work, but if there are magpies in the area, it usually pulls them in. Shootingman
Another good maggie caller is a few matches in a match box, shake it about & it chatters like a maggie.
