The question should be 'what do you need' - after all it is up to you to justify why you need specific calibres etc. I'm sure some on here asked for the Earth on their first application and who knows they may have been heading for a job on a 1000 acres with shooting permission etc as a given.

I would suggest most ask for a .22lr on their first application - and recently most have added a .17HMR to the list (ie both .22lr and .17HMR on the first application).

What eactly are you looking to shoot - what permission do you have (ie what calibre is the land you have permission for cleared for by the police) and what is your budget and future prospective needs. Answer these questions and you will answer your own original question.

Just out of interest - Why so many calibres??

22-250 - vermin, foxes

.22lr - vermin, foxes

.17hmr - vermin, foxes

.270 - vermin, foxes, deer

.22lr - vermin, foxes - Said on letter to FEO I am buying nightvision scope, so I want a dedicated NV rifle

.17hmr - vermin, foxes - Said on letter to FEO I am buying nightvision scope, so I want a dedicated NV rifle

Will,

Cheers for that I put sentences containing 'Vermin' four times on my FAC variation and was worried they'd look on it unfavourably... As in why so many calibres for one quary type.. I think Herts are pretty realistic in this area though as oppose to some county FLO's

Aaaah.... Well you're actually a bit lucky if you live in Herts, which you do... Because the herts FLO class foxes as vermin, which it seems a few other places do not. So if your 22lr says vermin, you can shoot a fox with it. I just put fox on the application form so that they don't think i'm just going bunny bashing with a 22-250...!

First I asked for a HMR. They lost that application so when I put it in again I asked for .17HMR, .22lr, 6.5x55 (with mentor). I had them all granted. Then I asked for a .223, granted. Then a .357H&H Magnum, granted. I'm just putting in for a Hornet, and will probably sell the HMR and .223

.17 HMR - Vermin / Foxes

.22 LR - Vermin

.22 WMR - Vermin / Foxes

.223 - Foxes (Must get that one changed)

.243 - Foxes / Deer

.308 - Foxes / Deer

All with moderators and expanding ammunition & all granted amazingly. I was advised to apply for as many or should i say whatever it is you think you will ever want / need, as it will cost you to add them later. I have 450 acres to shoot over as some sort of indication.
