Friday night fox control

Morning folks

I thought id stick up pic's of tonight's shooting while im awake!I went solo foxing with the scope mounted lightforce to a spot where a farmer i get on well with has a lot of sheep which will shortly be lambing,i brought jeff(grasshopper)and paul(tulkyuk) there when they visited last year and ironically the hill i shot the two foxes from tonight is the same hill paul fired at a fox from and missed last time round :good:

The night was very cold with the thermo in the car reading -3 and when up on the hills the wind made it feel like it was minus 13  The ground was frozen and every step i took sounded very loud so stealth was out the window tonight  The first few fields i shone through were empty bar one or two bunnies..the second field had a few sheep in it just behind a crest of a hill when i seen the eyes i got a little excited as i thought it was a fox a quick glance through the scope confirmed they were sheep ???

The first sign of charlie was in a corner of a field with a few trees and tall wild grass but it was a long way off so i made up the ground and spotted the fox mooching in the tall grass but when i went prone with the rifle i couldn't see the fox ??? i forgot to wear my waterproof trousers so lying on the ground didnt feel to plesant tonight but i stayed in that position for an unplesant 10 mins thinking the fox would come closer or walk up the hill behind the grass but as usual as soon as i stood up there was foxy looking straight at me standing under an oak hedge the slight bit of a breeze was blowing straight to the fox and it took off running over a hill i went to the top of the hill and spotted the fox at about 300yrds out sitting looking at me for a second then walked off i kind of gave up on that fox because i thought it was gone.

So then i went to the hill paul shot(and missed :P )from and turned on the rabbit squeal on the caller after about 5 mins of calling i spotted a fox 70yrds away standing beside a drain looking straight at me i had to be quick on this fella so i got down opened the scope caps and lined up on its shoulder and slipped off a 50gr american eagle dropping the fox on the spot....i worked the bolt and chambered a fresh round then flicked the lamp round to see was there any more coming to the call,i spotted a bright red pair of eyes bouncing in through the flock of sheep i had seen earlier....god bless sound moderators as he didnt seem to pay any attention to the shot just 1min before that.It was coming in like a train and i had to cough whistle and squeek to get it to stop which it eventually did at 60yrds and another AE killed it instantly  So 2 big dog foxes in the space of a minute the farmer will be delighted to get the good news in the morn ;)

In one pic you can see where the bullet passed through the fox and hit a tree about 10 yards behind the fox just goes to show how much energy is in a centrefire round even after expanding inside the fox ??? That fox was an old dog in poor enough condition with mange on its back an a lot of open wounds to its legs

Anyhoo time to get some much needed sleep :D

Good result,as you say stealth is out of the window at the moment,I'm now off to see if I can find any early morning wanders amongst the sheep.

I find its also a lot better to be out alone in these conditions as 1 makes a lot less noise than 2 and you dont have any tendancy to talk as the sound travels alot further on cold crisp nights.

well done chap, I have been sitting one spot out time and again in the cold, get a glimps of charlie most times but the ****** womt come in for love or money despite baits over time etc, and a shed load of calls, i will catch up with him sooner or later but the times you crack two in quick order make up for the long sit outs and cold nights :good:

I remember that place well Mark, probably not as well as Tulky though :good: He was fairly gutted at missing that fox, even more so after doing this to a rabbit just 5 mins later to check he was shooting your rifle ok

Nice to see your still busy with them, and we know there,s plenty there to keep you busy too,was that the same place we went over to the far side of and had about 4-5 hanging up just on the brow so were unable to get a shot at them ?? then the lamp/battery failed ???

Got a load of snow here at the moment, was going to be out last night, but the flu has got me again(what a wimp eh ???;) )

Well done mate, nice when they come in a few minutes apart like that, very considerate of them ???

Keith Thats exactly why i like going lamping alone most nights  The sound of the bullet crack went for miles god knows how loud it would sound without the mod.One of the foxes after it ran off(it was that one that i thought was gone)and about 10mins later started to make its way back to where it was feeding before i disturbed it the clever ****** obviously thought id have gone at this stage! It stopped and lay down 140yrds out in a clump of dead nettles i had to make up about 10yrds to get to the crest of the hill i was on but just as i was getting down a twig snapped under my elbow and the fox took off like a bat out of hell ??? Im nearly positive that fox is the second one i shot and was coming to the call.

Well done Mark good to see you back posting ???

Cheers rob i do always look in from time to time just didnt get the chance to do a lot of posting ;)

Aye, even the foxes seem to be yawning. Its no wonder at 4 am.

good write up

ps, did you get the bullet out of the tree to see what it looked like?

No ss i never got the bullet out but i would have a fair idea what it would look like...i think johngalway has a pic of a .223 round a researcher removed from a fox the hollow points usually just mushroom ;)

Jeff

That is just a stones through from where those foxes were hanging up and the good news is i now have permission to go in to that land to B) I had the flu about 3 weeks ago myself god its horrible you would'nt have the energy to do anything :D
