badshot
Dunno if doing this right but here goes, New to PW tonight been using shottie as mobile birdscarer on my rape, cant do much else with it as hopeless with it. Been using quad with .22lr and .17hmr barrels since last spring much better luck with this even dropping pigeons on ground, two with one shot yesterday at about 130 yards. Wabbits getting less since got rifle, applied to open licence now so as i can get the little ******* before they come and eat my crops. Foxes fall over quite nicely to .17 so should be able to stop em getting lambs this year as well. Any advice welcome, sure you will tell me if making complete fool of myself. should i open my eyes when aiming at pigeon with shottie? Dave-G
Welcom to the forum badshot. You get the pigeon lifted and shifted on with the hmr so thats all good, especially if you don't use the sound moderator. Obviously you are blessed with a police chief that allows fox to be shot with rimfire. Leicester is not so tolerant in that area so I'm waiting to get my ticket back with 17REM on it for fox - which according to HO guidelines can be conditioned for vermin too. I can't advise regarding the shotty other than it entails setting up hides decoys etc that a busy farmer may not have much time for? The occasional ground shot as you go about your business in the Land rover or tractor can have a positive albeit minor bag result. The 17REM will double my ground pigeon distance to 300~350 yards and as you have found it's easy to time it right for two kills with one bullet and it still gets them off the ground afterwards. badshot
Got very understanding police in this area, no problems with fox on .17 in Kent Also recently made contact with a group of police who are keen shooters and will go out mob handed to deal with pigeons so saves me the time of sitting around all day watching pigeons pass close but not close enough to do anything with. 300yds+ sounds like fun but very flat round here so like the fact that .17 remington v.max basically disintigrate on contact with almost anything. The most i have ever found in rabbits shot with them are a lot of little bits. On the subject of moderators currently have country pursuits which i use on .22 as well as .17 can any one tell me how the DM80 performs on .17 as i like the idea of it being a bit shorter for out the window shots. Dave-G
I've heard good stuff about the DM80 - google or search on here - but maybe a good idea to save it for bunnies and drop it off for the pigeon shots if it keeps it's zero. I don't know if you are familiar with the both "17's" . Although they are the same caliber the 17REM heads are heavier (25~30 grain I believe) and it's a centrefire with a muzzle velocity about 4200 FPS. The one I'm getting has a 1 in 9 twist rate custom barrel that would not handle the lighter heads properly.
badshot
Honestly don't know anything about 17REM but guessed it had a fair bit more oommph than hmr. Have googled DM80 and seems most people only have good things to say about it. Doubt wether gun will keep zero without mod as mine at moment affects POI by about 4 inches or so at 75 yds. On the flat land with very few trees you really don't hear much at all, so is possible to shoot whole mag of bunnies before they sod off down the holes, however on the hills with woodland about there is a lot of reflected noise and one shot is normally my lot with .17. Pigeons really don't seem to like one of their mates dropping dead amongst them while feeding though and is doing good job of shifting them with mod on still. Read some stuff on here last night about quad and agree fully that .22 don't come out very well but i had put it down to the fact that they are dirtier than .17 as a good clean of the chamber stops the problem for a while.
