Shooting today

Had a good day out today , where I shoot you don't get big bags but it was a nice day out . Braving the sleet , snow and rain I managed to get 2 rooks ,2 carrion crows ,3 woodies and not had one for a long time 1 magpie .

Could have had twice this if I would have shot the sitters in the tree next to me and also a grey squirrel that was about 5 Yards away staring at me but I could'nt do it to him , don't know why maybe getting soft in my old age .

Suprisingly there were some massive flocks of pigeon about , but on the fields over the main road on someone elses farm , although there were a fair few coming over tucking into the osr where I have permission but they were right next to the main road again , ******* . But there is a definite increase in pigeon action .

Anyway another top day out , going to have to jump in the bath now to warm up .

It wasn't very nice out there today, I had a couple of hours late afternoon. There were a few early sitters in the wood, so i creeped in expextting them to return. No way. They have had a load of buckshot up the a*se recently and are very sKittish.Poked about the wood and shot 4 nutties, a rat and 4 crows. At about 5.30 500+ pigeon went in to roost at the forestry commision next door.

Just got back myself & still can't feel my toes

Went to the shoot AGM, then went to our wood/flight pond about 3. Not many birds about (we clocked about a dozen maximum). Upon arriving the pond had mallard, widgeon, teal & tufted duck on - this all stopped when my mad lab decided to go for a swim. Anyway we stayed for 3 1/4 hours and the tally was 2 pigeon!Excellent conditions, cold, windy etc but one vital factor was missing - Pigeon!

One plus point is that the Farmer was muck spreading adjacent fields so if the Pigeons arn't hitting the OSR next week then at least we will have some corvids to have a pop at.

A chap i know has shot every saturday since the end of the game season and is shooting at least 100 pigeons each afternoon roost shooting. Mind you he is a damn fine shot and sells the pigeon for 35p each so pays for his cartridges.

Does he walk on water in his lunch break  Lucky blitter! Wouldn't matter if you were Digweed on our ground at the moment :o

Guest Mr Pieman

An old friend and I shot a small field of osr Saturday. Got there early (around 7) and had a stiff breeze from behind us all day.

We shot from the same hide and by 1530hrs we had picked up 77 birds

Our pattern consisted of 12 flockies, two flappers and one of Deako's flying birds on a bouncer. Seemed to work out well for us using a traditional horseshoe pattern.

Worse thing was running out of coffee and forgetting my sandwiches!!!

Going again on Thursday so hope the weather stays dry and the wind picks up!!

I've been with him once and he must of shot every pigeon we saw within 55 yards.

I suppose the secret is he has lots of pigeon to shoot at and has the ability to shoot straight upto 60y

Cor blimey mate !!! 60 yards is going some.

If he can get that up to 600 yards he might get the odd one or two where I shoot

Perrazi 34" full and super full sporter. Uses RC JK6 36g 5 shot, Express Somerset Game 42g 4's, Maionchi 34g 5's etc.

60yards is a long way i know but with a good cartridge and a bit of choke and more importantly a superb shot it is easily possible.

And before anyone says it's not possible go and buy some of the above top quality shells, shoot the tightest choke you have at a fridge etc and see what i mean- it is possible, but you have to be **** hot.

P.S. if you are ever in Devon go to Shalden Shooting School, Tiverton, where the ground owner throws a 65 yards crosser- he breaks them with a Winchester o/u and fibre wadded 24g 7.5's.

Sam F ,

Although I don't shoot at birds beyond 35-40 yards I can agree with you on the full choke as over the last month I have put in my half and three quarter chokes and have noticed a big difference on the clay ground , with the 3/4 even using 28 gram fibre 7 1/2 .

I can batter some of the clays at 50-60 yards and it has given me the confidence to leave the clays a little longer and take longer shots. I would imagine with full and super full this distance would be no problem if you are capable of hitting targets well at that range , may well go with the 3/4 and full option some time . Despite tightening up the chokes my scores have not gone down in fact the opposite they seem to have gone up . Had a pb of 41/50 on a fairly hard sporting layout the other week half of which were simultaneous pairs .

If any one doubts Sam f get down the local club , tighten up those chokes and have a go on those long clays .

May i say again that this chap is a superb shot, 94/100 sporting courses, 97/100 Double trap shoots etc. He has the ability to kill cleanly at 60 yards with the gun/ choke/cart combination he uses. Cartridges are one of the biggest things about the ranges, you can get a crappy pigeon special, clear pigeon, super game etc or you can splash out on carts costing over £190 per 1000. Some carts wont kill past 35 yards some will kill out to 60 yards- don't knock it till you've tried it! Go and buy some of the above and tighten you're chokes and shoot them at pattern plates- you still get a good pattern and penetration.

George Digweed can shoot phessies in Devon consitantly at 70 yards using 11/4 oz 4 shot and he doesnt ***** any more than you or I would at 30 yards.

Killing a clay and a live bird are 2 very different things as you point out, but it is possible if you are a good enough shot and have enough experience in shooting high birds.
