sid the sniper
There are lots of foxes around my farm and ive applied for a .22lr over the 17 because of low sound and low maintenance. But is it worth getting a 17 aswell for foxes because iv herd of people taking dog foxes out to 160 yds and the .222 and .223 rounds seem pretty expensive compared to .17 and they probably wouldnt get passed on 14 acres which i have. Do you think it is worth getting a 17 for the foxes or not?
pavman
some FEO's allow a 17MHR for Fox however you should banish from you mind thougts of dropping charlies at 160, its a cracking tool for Rabbits up to 150 lets not start this one again pleeds pavman
al4x
Ignore the essex boys claims of 160 yard foxes, they're ok to 100-120 yards max but you're best off having a discussion with your FEO when he calls as he can ammend the application during the interview. He may or may not approve of a rimfire for foxes and you definitely need to phrase it as if you see a fox thats close while rabbit shooting rather than making him think its a dedicated fox gun because its not. That said at close range foxes don't like it and it is effective as many members can proove. Cost really isn't an issue as you're unlikely to shoot many. p.s pav similar minds think alike Edited April 17, 2009 by al4x
Baldrick
You may get away with a .22 Hornet, which will allow you to shoot with greater confidence, with less risk of wounding, and in a greater range of weather conditions. I have a .17 HMR myself, but I have a realistic view of the round's capability. On 14ac, you're unlikely to get a .223 approved unless it is particularly undulating and remote land. sid the sniper
the farm next to me has over 400 acres which im allowed to shoot on whenever but has a footpath through the middle.
Beardo
both my rifle permissions are riddled with roads or footpaths, yet they're both cleared for .223 (different FLOs as well - but both Herts), you can but ask
Salop Matt
I dont belive you can have fox on a FAC against a .22lr ! But I could be wrong. And i know what i says on licences and what actually happens can be 2 different matters. For a specific fox rifle you should go bigger cal but the noise will just be something you will have to live with if its being done propperly. If you dont mind reloading your own and the expense involved with buying reloading gear then thats the route to take, if not find out if your area allow fox against HMR and pick a HMR up . Also the land you have to shoot over will have some baring on what rifle is deamed suitable for you !
Blackbart
Northumbria DO allow 17hmr for fox but it is a matter of common sense.I wouldnt go looking for charlie with my 17 as i have a bigger rifle that does a better job but you can take them with it, just be realistic about it. andy33
Hi, could i but in on this thread, i recently aquired some good land for shooting and have already had some good days on pigeon and crow. The farmer descent chap has also asked me to have a go at the bunny's and i'm happy to oblige and have recently purchased an Air Arms s410, so i was thinking along these lines would my feo see my experiance with the air rifle as a sort of credit to a future application for my fac. Any comments.

Baldrick
the farm next to me has over 400 acres which im allowed to shoot on whenever but has a footpath through the middle. Sod the .17 HMR theory - just get a .223!
JohnGalway
Get a real gun for shooting foxes. Using the argument that .223 etc is too expensive is a load of ******** when talking about a foxing rifle, being humane to the animal does come into it. hiho
it might be expensive but who shoots more than 10 foxes every week youl be shooting at long range and not have to aim for the head every shot so you would be getting more foxes shot aswell
sid the sniper
It would work out pretty expensive when the 2 sons want to pop off 30 rounds each at some targets 50 yards away!
