I have shot a plethora of munties with 223 as well as roe in Scotland, I think it is purel down to shot placement, and timing, if the beast is full of adrenelin, you may get a runner, but those are the shots perhaps best left, as the meat will taste ayway.

how many muntjac you shot mate with a 223 ??

Wow, this one's going on a bit isn't it!

Nick. Well done for doing what you felt was right at the time. My opinion is that you were right to leave the shot. If you're new to this kind of thing then nerves really don't help your marksmanship. I'm sure you'll spot this one again and take him, and we'll be very pleased to hear the story when you do. I've left a Roe Buck four times in the last six weeks because I wasn't happy with the shot. Every time I was 95% sure I could take it cleanly...Not good enough!

Ackley, why are you being such a pain in the butt? You can't say a head shot is as safe a bet as a boiler room shot because it's not, end of story! The head is on the end of a long flexible bit called a neck. It can move unexpectedly and quickly. When you're lining up the shot the Deer only needs to move its head 4" as the trigger is pulled and can end up with the important bits of its face hanging off. It's not going to die quickly like that! With a heart shot it may start to take a step or even try to run but a shot 4" out on the heart will still mess it up and kill it fairly quickly. It has to propel its whole body to move its vitals which will happen much more slowly.

Yes head shots are possible. They are also more risky. Many of us don't want to take that risk. That's not old school or letting magazine writers sway our reasoning, we just respect our quarry enough to let them go. Every shot is a calculated risk, some of us just like to keep the odds in our favour. I'm not saying it's bad practice, it's just more risky. With Muntjac being so twitchy it pays to keep the shots sensible.

a head or neck shot is a good as any other,as I have said taking any shot the condition must be right, and yes a badly placed head or neck is posable BUT so is a badly placed heart and lung,

the beast only has to step or turn at the wrong moment just so dont go there mate

I seen deer with the stomach hanging out because someone dropped the shot,Ive seen heart and lung shots go over 100 yards into deep cover when you think you have missed as you cant find it

we all have a story to tell mate

when shooting anyhting things can go wrong and will go wrong, thats why the conditions has to be right,

you can argue as much as you like there is more deer lost with a missed place heart and lung shot than any other

talking of Muntjac i take it that a buck with close to 6" of rather thick horn would be quite good, saw one last night while sitting out looking for charlie. 30 yards away never seen one with that much before. Its on a farm where they're not shot and none of the surrounding farms do either.

What are you suggesting?

Ima not suggesting anything  you said you ahve shot "loads" with yiour 223,so seeing its only been a matter of months since this caliber has been allowed to be used on small deer, you must have been a busy boy to harvest 23 in such a short time scale

Like I said in my earlier post, work has been quiet for me due to the recession, so I have had a lot of free time

well you must have one hell of a peice of ground and travel quite a lot as theres no muntjac in west yorkshire.

so all 23 were shot with your 223 ? did any run where any lost did you take only a heart and lung shot, did you miss any

Now whos making assumptions? Nowhere did I mention muntjac and west Yorkshire. Ask Dave where I shoot them, I won't be posting that information on a public forum

That's no more unbelievable than your "400 yard blowing hooley fox shot" or "7 beasts in snow".......

Why is this such a problem for you
