Unless you have been up to no good they need to make an appointment.

DaveK
Are the police able to carry out spot inspections of shotgun and rifle owners guns or do they need to give notice? Any particular reason for asking? The firearms guidance only gives advice on grant or renewal checks. Ch10. 10.3 Before issuing or renewing a firearm certificate, the chief officer of police must be satisfied that the applicant can be permitted to have the firearm(s)/ammunition in their possession without danger to the public safety or to the peace. This will normally involve an interview with the applicant, a home visit and an inspection of their security. Visits should, wherever possible, be made by prior appointment and take place at a mutually convenient time. http://police.homeoffice.gov.uk/publicatio...pdf?view=Binary As per any knock on the door to gain entry, if they want to come in for a spot check I'd assume they'd need a warrant. And if they had a warrant it wouldn't be on the basis of a spot check. Edited July 10, 2009 by DaveK

VicW
If anyone turns up at your door claiming they have come to do a spot inspection of your guns and security,be very suspicious. Keep them outside, ask for their ID even if they are in uniform.Take the ID inside and shut and lock the door.Contact your local firearms department or police station and tell them what has happened and ask for confirmation that the inspection and visitor are genuine. The only out of phase inspections I have come across have been arranged in advance and have been for a reason, such as a rapid turnover in guns or a large increase in the number of guns held, the suspicion being that the certificate holder was dealing illegally. Slug
Being new to the sport I am a little ignorant to what the police can and can't do and how much they they bluff things, if for example you were arrested for an offence do dibble come along and take your gun (s) and SGC or does the FLO have to come and do it ?...Do I have to surrender my gun safe keys to any police officer ?.. You do whatever they tell you to do, say thank you and then kiss their boots. If you've a problem with it, sort it out afterwards.
