Mark,

 

the cable should be fine! i bet it's you ISP (Internet provider) who is it?

do you get a little box done the bottom right of the screen saying "network connected" and one saying "network unplugged" or some thing like it? if not its your isp for sure! or maybe a problem router?

had a new ethernet card and a patch cable fitted today, and its still the same.

this is after virgin said the old ntl dongle was knacked.

took me all day to get on line, have to keep shutting the pc down to get a connection.

There's a couple of things we can do to try and work out the fault...

 

Mate... do this for me 1st please

 

Goto..

 

Start - Run - In the box type "cmd" and press return... (without the quotes)

 

In the black window that then appears, type "ipconfig /all"

 

then select, copy and paste ALL output here.

Another one once you have done the above it the following:

 

Type "nslookup" then return and post the results

 

once you have done that type "news.bbc.co.uk" and report what it comes back with.

 

Type "exit" and then type the following:

 

"Ping 4.2.2.1" and post the results.

 

Sorry if this is confusing but we are trying to find where the problem is, from what i have read i am 95%+ sure it's the ISP.

Jon when he types this he gets........

 

request timed out request was 2 seconds then comes up cannot find server then black screen flashes straight of..
