Cranfield
Its been a long time since I used a Larsen trap, but every year when I needed a new decoy bird, I baited the Larsen with a dead rabbit and trapped one. I'm not sure how else you would get one, they don't sell them down the Pet Shop.
pete evans
now i know ****** all about trapping so dont know if this is useful advice or not, i read an article in one of the gun mags that reconned that a decent size mirror in a baited larson was the best way of capturing your first bird. I guess the rationalle is that the bird sees its reflection and thinks theres another bird in there. pete
M ROBSON
We're still catching Carrion Crows in our trap at the moment, I also shot one off a nest today.
Teal
Try your local keeper- they'll be happy to give you one, if they have any.
dunganick
ive tried all the local keepers, they are shutting up shop with their traps, so have given away their birds, or killed them

Cranfield
If they don't trap them, how do other Larsen Trap users get their call birds ? Don't be shy, tell dunganick how to catch one.
Teal
I used to use some hens eggs with one broken on top of the trap and more inside.
Highlander
This time of year a birds (chicken or better still a goose) egg a bit broken might work. Dead rabbit should do it but I think you're gonna have to be somewhat patient. Few years back I had a magpie in a Larsen with a whole dead rabbit. Bird started cleaning rabbit from nose back right down to skeleton, bit by bit. One day watched two free birds at the trap. One grabs decoy by tail and bangs it up against cage wall whilst the other tries to drag rabbit out through bars on other side. Cunning or what. They both ended up dead just to prove we humans got the edge
henry d
Try baiting with eggs if your in a rural area if it`s close to housing I`ve been told that bread is good, but I`d check it 3-4 times a day if I were doing that in case any non target species get in. Shotgun Mike
I have a 'nest' with eggs in one side and an egg on top and a dead rabbit in the otherside. Works pretty well.
