stupidsalmon
Spotted it today, so went back up to the burrow with the camera. Waited for about 5mins and out it popped. One of this years young 'uns. I've seen plenty of black ones, not albino type ones however. Ever seen one before? Teal
It's not albino (no pink eyes), I have heard of these fawn or cinnamon colour rabbits being seen at a friend's near Winchester. On my dad's farm in ireland we have dozens of black ones who are off limits. A few years ago when myxie hit us badly we lost all the black ones but because it is a recessive allele some of the brown ones still had it and low and behold linford appeared that summer, named because he'd move all over the farm- next summer there were many more black ones, and now they are about 25% of the population. Might have to start shooting them soon, just hope the bad luck they supposedly bring isn't true (Just a note the area where we leave the black rabbits is not cropped, otherwise they'd be finding themselves in pies as well.). Devilishdave
I snared an adult that colour about 15 years ago. All the other rabbits in the warren were normal colour!! Dave
dunganick
i suppose its just another logical step of evolution, if the surrounding area has alot of sand, the sand coloured rabbits survive and that allele will be continued on in other offspring. i bet he gets picked on though... The Big Red Fox
A good gamekeeper never shoots the black ones, it lets him know if the poachers are working his ground but I suppose they leave the black one too and so the cycle goes on eh! henry c
the reason they are rare is because they are the first to get killed by preditors, as they stand out so well
stupidsalmon
Very true Henry. This one doesnt have a great life expectancy as theres a fox living right next to the warrens down some old badger sets.
