roadkill
its about time these air guns were treated like a shotgun and be put on a licence and be made to be locked in a cab

amateur
its about time these air guns were treated like a shotgun and be put on a licence and be made to be locked in a cab and do you seriously believe that the massive amount of regulation that that would involve would significantly reduce the trivial numbers of annual deaths caused by air-rifles? fully accepting, however, that any accidental death is tragic
David BASC
Morning all, As you can imagine it is pretty busy here at the moment! We have been giving radio interviews yesterday and this morning, and also been on TV defending airguns, and trying to put this incident into context The Gun Control Network have cranked up their campaign as you can imagine. Everything points to hits simply being a tragic accident, and nothing more, and personally I find it absolutely disgusting that anyone involved in ‘anti gun’ campaigning should use this accidental tragedy to attack legitimate airgunning - what sick minds some people have - heaping even more pressure and recrimination onto two families who’s world has just fallen apart. By all means lets all attack any illegal use of airguns or shotguns or rifles or any other firearm, but licensing of airguns will not do any good in this context. We do not want a knee jerk reaction that goes anywhere towards licencing. Aigunning remains a key entry point into all forms of shooting, let alone a very important part of shooting in its own right- lets not do anything to limit or restrict this. I am afraid, all facts point to the airgun being used properly and legally - this was a sad and tragic accident David
Guest
Well done DAVID for sticking up to shooting sports! It is very tragic what happened but this shouldn't mean that we need ever tighter legislation and a licence for airguns. The shooters here who ask for air gun licences: SHAME ON YOU! George1990
The owner of the gun should have kept the gun out of reach of the children. It's as simple as that.

Andy H
Apparently the incident happened on a supervised shooting range :- A five-year-old boy who died after being shot with an air rifle was playing on a shooting range at the country bungalow he was visiting, it has been reported. Joe Cooke and his family, from Ealing, west London, were holidaying in Wiltshire. He is believed to have been at the premises with his mother and two brothers when he was struck. The range had been set up in the extensive grounds of Bernard Allnutt's house, in the village of Fovant, near Salisibury, Sky News said. Joe was not using a weapon but is thought to have been caught in the cross fire at the address near Salisbury. He was airlifted to hospital in Bristol for emergency surgery but died on Monday afternoon. The range had been supervised at all times and Joe's death was simply a "tragic accident", Wiltshire Police said. Chief investigating officer DCI Sue Austin told Sky News: "He just got caught by a pellet. "Normally you would get a bruise or a nick, but it depends where on the body you get caught. He suffered head injuries.
