apache
The dead give away with the Blackthorn bush are the giant 1" or more thorns! Sloes also have a large central stone. The blue colour is a naturally occurring yeast - it wipes off with your fingers and they are much darker purple.
Diceman
If they aren't split don't forget to ***** them with a sharp knife a few times, or if you are easily bored mash 'em up a bit (this makes the straining at the end a bit harder though)
Diceman
Dear me the censors are at it again...the missing word rhymes with mick and is what you might do to your finger with a needle if you are careless. Or what you might call Gordon Brown.
shot shot
Gordon Brown. thieving, over taxing one eyed scottish idiot?
Markio
How long can you store sloes in a freezer prior to preparing for sloe gin making?
lord_seagrave
Bramble Vodka sounds good -anyone got a recipe quick cos i picked mine today and her indoors will waste em in a pie. Waste them in a pie? My goodness, man. On topic, the 2005 sloe vodka has nearly run out and so I do need to venture out this year. Is Netto still doing vodka/gin at a knock-down binge-Britain rate? McF
Im new to doing this but have found some bushes on the new shoot yesterday full of them, so im going to give it a go. So heres the daft question if you pick them before the first frost do you ***** them before or after you put them in the freezer. mcf

smig4373
Well am not really into bushes I just take its fruit. So i could be wrong But its sort of like the hawthorn(i think) The berries are round and purple. If its like the bushes round here they should be easy to spot. xxxsuzy But then again i could be wrong. Sloes are from Blackthorn (prunus spinosa) and Haws are from Hawthorn (cratecus montgiya)..different family altogether....Remember if your going to *rick them..use a cocktail stick or a real silver fork...dont use steel cutelry...the steel taints the sloes... kernel gadaffi
I managed to collect 8 lb in about 70 minutes today, going out again tomorrow, I went to four of my usual haunts today and found that the farmer had cut the trees down on one part, about a 50-60 yard stretch I'd been beaten to two more but struck gold at the last, plus I have me secret place to collect from yet, might go there tomorrow afternoon
Bleeh
Well I took 6lbs and turned at least 4lbs of it into gin, and with the 2liters of damson I've got going aswell, I think that'll do me on the booze front for now (it's getting expensive!). Is there any thing else I could do with sloes? - There's still another 40lbs that could eaisly be picked at my haunts
