ShaggyRS6
I had this problem with my first Lab. Which, incidentally he grew out off. And I did do a search on the forum but kept getting an error. So Trixie 15 months toodles up the garden whilst we were watching the TV. All was quiet so I went to investigate, and she is halfway through he poop. Now, before we got her when we were visiting every couple of days as part of the integration i had seen her do it once before, so its not something that's just happened since she has been with us. I have read a few things, from boredom (this would bode well as she has been crated for 5 days as she has had a spay) to wrong diet (currently on Skinners Working Dog mix) to all strange and wonderfull theories. Any ideas?

CharlieT
I'm afraid that despite the clap trap you will read on the subject It's something some dogs do and very hard to stop in adult dogs who have developed the habit. I would suspect that your Lab at 15 months old has been doing this for a long time, probably since she was a puppy. The best solution for you is to clear up the mess as soon as the dog has deposited it and therefore leaving nothing around to tempt her. As you said in a previous thread that she empties herself on command this should be fairly easy to acheive. However you may find this impossible to stop due to the dogs age and the fact that the habit is now well established.
MM
tie a carrier bag to her ****, that way its already contained. Or take a dump in her food bowl, see if that oputs her off Seriously though, i would go with the clearing up straight away.
ShaggyRS6
Yeah, normally do clean it up straight away. I guess not being used to having a Lab around I forgot just what they can get up to. Aero has never done it. As you say. Dont give her the opportunity. Cranfield
Dogs usually go either first thing in the morning, or after a feed. Escort her into the garden in the morning and stay with her, if she does anything clear it up immediately, if she doesn't then bring her in. When she worries to go out (assuming she is house trained), then someone go with her, watches and clears up immediately. If she turns to it at any time, a loud verbal reprimand like, "Leave It" works. Its not unusual in young dogs, but most can be stopped. Dirty Harry
I was told feeding them pineapple makes them stop eating their ****. How it can smell worse than the **** I dont know!
ShaggyRS6
I too was told it was a lack of something. But I have only ever known of Labs doing it, and when they are young. I am sure there are other breeds that do/have, but I have only had it with Labs.
paul1966
i think the thing with Labs is they will scoff anything that looks remotely edible. mine does it but only when she messes at night, i always think she knows she shouldn't mess in the house so tries to get rid of the evidence. Cranfield
Just about all breeds will do it. I have been lived with springers, lurchers, terriers, retrievers, setters, border collies and the otterhound over the years and they have almost all done it. There are 1001 opinions as to why they do it, the most popular are, "mineral/vitamin deficiency", "feeding complete pellet food that doesn't get completely digested first time round", "boredom", "its the breed". Its worth the effort to stop them doing it, its not hard and it can be done.
