Evil Elvis
Well, I never thought Id beat 5 foxes in a night from last week but i just did....6!!! I got to the permission before Raja Clavata and Dunc again, hadnt seen a thing, they rang to say they would be 10 minutes so i sauntered off to the rendevous point. After a few steps a quick scan revealed 3 sets of eyes under two huge oak trees in the middle of the field. I squeeked and one set came belting at me at top speed from around 200 yards down to 70 ish.........crack, he got a headshot and dropped like a stone, into the stream, but i managed to retrieve him. The other 2 sets of eyes had come down the hill and were at around 135 yards from me, one was a cat which i believe is feral and hangs with the foxes, the other nipped through the hedge at the bottom of the hill so i slipped through and there he was around 130 yards away, one squeek and he turned round to face me, whallop......one nasty headshot and dead as a stone!! The second fox certainly didnt suffer!!!! Just then Raja and Dunc turned up and we headed off in search of bunnies...we got about 10 yards and Raja spotted another set of eyes on the brow of the hill, we both laid on the ground, pods out and Dunc squeeked her in, she came to 123 yards and we double whammied her, both shots in the head area. We then tried to walk off that field and actually made it into the next one along, and believe it or not we scanned back and there was another fox!!!! It was about 40 yards behind us and got the evil/raja double whammy..straight i nto a deep ditch full of stingers and not wishing to get stung thats where she stayed!! We walked about another mile and came to a bit where there are usually bunnies we saw 2 but didnt get a shot off before thay scooted into the bushes, we saw another fox 200+ yards away in the next field that isnt ours, so we tried to squeek it in, it was interested and came closer but not onto our land so we walked off, after around 125 yards i stopped and looked back and there he was sat on our land!!! We laid down and double whammied him off the pod..again another double headshot and it fell on the spot. At this point Raja and Dunc cried off like a couple of girls because they had work tomorrow. I did a circuit of the other side of the farm and saw one rabbit which i didnt even get a shot at. On the way home I stopped at one of my local permissions where they are saying that the rabbits have had a population explosion, its only 20 acres or so. I walked out into the first meadow and there were 2 rabbits but they scooted through to the golf course, I went round the corner into the main paddock and there were at least 20 bunnies and 3 foxes in my filed and 2 in the next..hmm bunnies or fox, bunnies or fox....sod it....fox!!! I chose the closest one which was around 100 yards and crept up to it a little so that I could lean on a fence post...BOOM the noise seemed so loud on this little farm!!!!, another headshot at 70 ish yards a beautiful conditioned dog fox!! The others ran into the next farm and no amount of squeeking was going to bring them back so I called it a night. As I got to the farm house there were rabbits every where so im going to have to go back with the .22lr and sort them out.......I didnt think theyd appreciate the hmr so close to the house at 02:00hrs!!!!! That brings the tally of foxes this year to 27...........25 of which were on one farm!!!!!! 11 in the last 2 nights out!!! and there were still more calling as I left the farm! mick miller
Good shooting, a very nice write up and thanks for sharing! You've whetted my appetite for tonight, just got back from a recce round a new permission and it's heaving with bunnies As an aside, I'm known to grab nettles by the hand and pull them up, strip the leaves from the stem by pulling them through the fingers all in my pursuit of the perfect nettle cordage. Does that make me a man or just mad?

George1990
Nice one. Were those all taken with the HMR? I've was never sure about taking foxes with mine as it is such a small round, but it does that to them I needn't worry!

Raja Clavata
Word of warning though, they are only that effective on foxes that (formerly) resided in Essex.
