Fisherman Mike
Thanks Rooster, I am well aware of the reality of it all and the cost, Perhaps more than most as I have worked on Multi Million pound construction and infrastructure projects for most of my working life. I respect all of your views and can sympathize, particularly with those of us who are at the sharp end of cash strapped organisations or charities seeking further funds just to survive. The problem is we are a small nation but in the scheme of things very rich and highly populated, ecomomically it is difficult to balance the national payments and justify this type of expenditure but I believe it to be well worth it. You must ask yourselves, will other expenditure on essential services suffer because of it and I firmly believe that it wont. I know this country isnt perfect in many ways but ive travelled to and worked in quite a few and there are many places in this world a damn sight worse than this. I am sure we all strive for utopia, fish shoot and hunt all day, go to sleep, wake up never get ill, a never ending larder, no congestion, no immigrants, no pollution, no unemployment and thousands and thousands of Pigeons. Wouldnt that be nice. Trouble is we all look at life through rose coloured spectacles... Welcome all to the 21st century.. have a look out the back door and you will see it alive and kicking. I happen to believe, as do millions of other Brits. that this is the best thing which has happened to us as a Sporting nation since the World Cup in 1966 and a real opportunity to demonstrate to the world that Britain is indeed a Great Nation. I dont believe for one second that the other countries Governments and Peoples are not absolutely gutted that their bids didnt succeed. I cant believe the negative attitude towards this.... "Thank you World we dont want the games to return to what was once the Greatest Capital city in the World, No we will just stay here, save our money and stew in our own juice of Apathy" Not for me im afraid, Im behind it 100% Cheers. old rooster
Really impressed by your obvious positive feelings for this event, I have been told that I'm a cynical old sod but I truly grow weary of being shafted by a government which never tells the truth or gives realistic figures on what certain things will actually cost us. My cynicism is born of experience I'm afraid and I still have a very bad feeling about this one, in honesty it's just too complex for the idiots who will get to sort it out to organise and that in itself is frightening. Browning
My 65 year old mum has just called me in tears. She has just been informed that, for the third time, her triple heart bypass operation has been cancelled.....WHY Because, yet again, they don't have enough beds in intensive care. No bloody government will EVER be able to justify to me how they can spend millions of pounds on trying to out-do the rest of the world, to enable a few athletes to compete for baubles, when they don't have enough hospital beds to treat critically ill people. Browning
My Dad and I have both written letters to our local Laborious MPs asking them to justify. If he/they ever reply I'll post it so everyone can have a laugh at the absolute rubbish they will no doubt write.

Nobody on here said it, or even came close. We all have our own opinions and lets respect that. I just hope we are not saying, "I told you so", in 7 years time. lurcherboy
Fantastic news for me because I'm on my way up to Trafalgar square on the pull! Shame the government have spent loads of time and heaps of cash on the bid rather than sorting out the colosal mess that is this country. As I only live a stones throw from Stratford that is definatley my cue to get the hell out of here before 2012!! Pike Or Pike, you could wait a few years and rent out your penthouse suite B) On a more serious note, I was told by a athletic coach, who shoots, that the the countries competing for the games must show that all citizens are able to practice their chosen sport in the competiting country. How do our competitors practice pistol shooting? LB

Fisherman Mike
I just hope we are not saying, "I told you so", in 7 years time. You probably all will.. even if its a success financially it will be difficult for those who oppose it now to accept it as a success later. Thinking about it logically they would be completely Hypocritical if they did. I have the suspicion that some of the public Like to run with the Fox and hunt with the Hounds. Cranfield
Mike, I hope it is a great financial success and I will be delirious if it is totally self financing. the last engineer
Have been reading with interest , and i have to say im on the for side with Mike and many more , seems to me the "GAMES" bean counters have already forked out a cool 40,000,000 or so in the interest of obtaining the games since Soule. a quote from the old Kevin Costner movie "field of dreams " "IF YOU BUILD IT ,THEY WILL COME " rings true . I know the games will bring a lot of joy, entertainment ,heartache and tears in many sports to many athletes as well as spectators alike ,local comunities will benefit well . Good on you England ,power to all involved, now and the future . Ive booked my place to stay already ,looking to take a couple of weeks off and pay a visit . In August of this year, Edmonton Canada are hosting the " World Master's Games " its embarising the to see how tight assed the city are with money being held back certain venues they dont favour are boycotted at the cost of events . I hope the Londoners rise from the carnage of the last few days and hold the best Games ever . Martin

rjimmer
I think all sports injury victims should wait in the NHS queue along with the rest of us, and pay for their treatment, instead using up resources, whether paid for by sponsorship of not, that would be better utilised in getting people in proper jobs, back to work. old rooster
I don't mind being accused of being cynical but I don't think I'm overtly hypocritical. I personally have no interest in athletics or football but have no problem with those who do, as long as the events organised to cater for the "fans" don't end up costing an inordinate amount of public money or cause massive disruption and violence to those living near the venues. Football and it's followers has been responsible for large scale disruption in the past, as far as I'm aware the levels of violence have been reduced but there was a time when it was so bad that any minority interest sport would have been banned as a result of being so far out of control. I don't (personally) like the attitudes shown to the public and in particular the younger generation, by sports "stars", they are largely uncouth, yobbish and the last type I'd want my offspring to emulate. Many top football teams are very exploitative of the followers; some changing the design of their clothing several times a season to keep sales up, kids have to have the latest kit or be ridiculed by their peers. It's a pity that people bow to this pressure as it allows the clubs to continue with their exploitation but I guess if they allow it they only have themselves to blame. I still can't see the 2012 olympics being anything other than hugely expensive to the British tax payer but if it works out to the contrary I'd be the first to admit that I'm wrong. Deffo a touch on the cynical side but as I've probably said before it's cynicism born of life experience.
