Equipment advice for novice

Hi - I have permission to shoot pigeons (perhaps the hard part I understand) but need a bit of advice as to what to buy.

I would like to start off with a decent set of poles and net and some decent decoys - don't want to buy rubbish but also can't say money is no object!

Also wondering whether the swivel type bucket seats I've seen are a good buy (and will hold my 16 stone for any length of time)?

Any advice gratefully received thanks.

Its gona get expensive mate.Try and start with 1/2 dozen half shells or sum fuds. Then if your lucky enough to shoot a few just add then to your pattern. If you have a chest freezer keep a dozen in feather and thaw them out the night before shooting.keep an elastic band round the leg so they dont get mixed up with any you wanna eat. Most people make their own poles and some just use sticks from the hedgerows. Dont worry about a rotary just yet.But get yourself a decent net.Have a look on youtube at making floaters ect.Oh I nearly forgot hobnobs and a good flask.

Where in thd north east are you?

Good Morning

took up pigeon shooting about 18 months or so ago so still very much a novice myself ( had previous shooting experience in "rough shooting").

These are just my ideas and if it helps then you're welcome

I got a basic starter set from A! decoys and bits and pieces from my local gun dealer.

The stuff I got to start with was:

stealth net and 4 hide poles ( get the poles with the "kicker-plate" for use in hard ground) A1's sets are good and delivery service good

12 plastic shell decoys . These are a bit shiny so when you get them paint them yourself with a matt grey paint ( you can get tester pots at any DIY store cheaply)

12 tent pegs to secure your poles and net on a windy day and stop your hide blowing all over the place ( you can cut pegs from a hedge but metal pegs go into hard ground easier)

some green para cord so you can make guy ropes to help hold you poles steady (use with tent pegs)

some form of camo head covering.....can be a baseball style cap , a bush hat , an all in one face veil and head covering .....choice is yours

a swivel bucket type seat ( the one I got was a Jack Pike one) it's useful to put cartridges/flask/tent pegs/ sarnies/ etc etc in

a big bag to put your kit in ( the one I got was a Jack pike one)

thermal underwear if your shooting in winter ( you have to sit very still in a hide )

tea tree oil if your shooting in summer ( keeps the gnats/mozzies away)

I have to carry my gear to where I shoot so the above is enough by the time you add cartridges/gun etc

This lot will get you started for not a lot of money.

If you enjoy it (and it isn't everyone's cup of tea) you can later add things like flappers and magnets and who knows what else

You don't say if you have shot before so remember :

what you take out ....you bring back and I don't mean just kit so make sure you don't leave empty cartridges / food wrappers / drink cans/bottles / fag packets etc behind

The last thing you need ,which you can't buy, is a sense of humour. You will need it !

good luck and kind regards

Hi if you only want to buy once by good gear but it'll cost, my experience in the pigeon world has cost me along the way ending up with gear that works every time.

Seat this is the most vital bit of kit ,forget shooting sticks and fancy pigeon shooting chairs they sell ,get yourself one of the go outdoors director style chairs foldable green chairs they have a back rest you can sit for 8 hrs no problem I've gone and made loads and nothing comes close to these !!

Batteries and whirly magnet well I use 2 Pinewood magnets yes expensive but superb coupled with Tracer lithium batteries they run for days even tho you forget to charge day to day. I use this kit daily and trust me it works and if you want to lug a windscreen wiper motor model and car battery across a field then do if you have to. The Tracer lithium battery's sit flat in the field will run flappers ,peckers etc I ran magnet and flapper off one battery yesterday all day.

Hide poles, well make your own get someone with a welder to make you some up they will last out 3-4 sets of bought ones ,and they don't have to be too heavy make attatchment for a roof as well .

I use a roof everytime never do I set a hide up without a roof unless I'm in middle of stubble field or certain situations.

Flappers are also good I use flapper and a timer.

Anyway that's my findings and opinions on years of buying **** gear that doesn't last might not be everyone's agreement but .

Out of interest, why do you use a roof? Do you think it's necessary?

Yes I use a roof 95% of the time I find it makes the inside of the hide darker. Any movement is masked tremendously I can get away with not wearing a face mask if I want and lifting the gun vary rarely gets seen .

I can't remember in ages birds shying away on approach after seeing me or movement ,this just doesn't happen .i see loads people decoying and I can see movement parked on roadside watching them as light enters thro top of hide.

Everybody to there own and I respect what people feel is right for them , I manage to shoot pigeons daily and always striving for better but think I've got there regarding equipment and set up eventually after years of persevering , I personally wouldn't set up now without a roof.

That's obviously your choice. I don't use a roof and I feel that I'm hidden well enough for pigeons not to spot me.
