Friday as normal saw us heading out on our normal circuit , checking the stubbles on various Farms. A large number had worked the stubble in and we were presented with ploughed fields. We stopped as we found a flight line and whatched it for ten minutes and a steady stream of birds were heading out of the city. We found them on a wheat stubble field and went to the farm to confirm permission. It was hard work convincing the Farmer to let us shoot as he had the game birds in the woods and coverts on the edge of the field. We made the concession that we would shoot away from the gamebirds and let the wind take the noise away, we made this on the basis that we would be able to set the decoys in a manner so that we satisfield the Farmer , Keeper and Shoot Captain. We drove back to the field and across the stubble to a stand of trees which was a perfect position with the wind off our back ,taking the noise away and set up with the normal twelve thawed birds , two angels and ten on spikes , no magnet. The first birds in landed in the pattern so we thought great we are in for a good day. It was13.00 and the first two hours went with steady shooting then the wind changed and came from our left so we had to change the pattern but they still came in . We packed up at 18.00 and picked up two hundred and thirtysix pigeons and eleven crows that came in range.

Saturday saw us in a different direction and after four farms we had not seen a bird, DB decide that he needed some Bacon and Egg Brain Food. While we parked on the layby we saw some pigeons crossing lower down the road , so we followed them to a Farm that we know has not cut his wheat yet . We drove into the yard and saw the Farmer and he informed us that he had done three cuts on the far edge of the field , so we drove down the check and the birds were hitting it hard. We set up with twelve fresh birds from the day before, four angels and eight stand ups. We were in quiet and elevated position and could se the Malvern hills in the distance, it was now 12,30 and we started to shoot within a half an hour we had our first rain shower and the afternoon just got worse after that with constant intermittent rain showers , we stuck it out under the brolly till 18.00 and picked up ninetyeight pigeons and twentyfive crows. the rain was constant so we did not take a picture.

I get a lot of replies saying that "you must have a lot of birds in your area" so when I got back home I checked the OS Map and the two locations that we shot this weekend were twenty seven miles as the crow flies apart.

Excellent bags PC, i notice you have'nt used the magnet or electric flappers this weekend, do you feel the pigeons have seen too much of them lately?

Yes , with all the " Butterfly Shooters " out they all seem to have the standard kit, so we go back to basics and tried to replicate a field of feeding birds.
