Logan did his 1st warm retrieve

We took Logan out to one of our permissions today to see how he would get on. OH took his gun and I left mine behind to concentrate on Logan.

We had a mooch round the fields, but nothing was showing so went up to the woods. Logan was tracking a scent within minutes of us getting into the woods and next minute a pheasant flew across us. Sadly OH missed it, so we carried on.

Logan was doing a great job looking round all the woods circling us and pointing at the odd rabbit hole, but nothing was showing.

It was interesting seeing the much gentler style of setting up that a Setter does compared to the much more manic work of Leo the Springer. Eventually we went across the fields and OH spotted some pigeons and downed one. Unfortunatley it landed on the ice on one of the ponds, so we didn't send Logan to fetch it. OH managed to retrieve it with a branch and then let Logan fetch it for me which he did enthusiasticly. I dropped it in the grass a couple of times on the walk back and Logan went tearing back to find and fetch it for me each time. Very pleased with how he is progressing so far. :)

He is lovely. He spends a lot of time cuddled up with our mini pinscher who loves to snuggle with him. He has calmed down a lot this last year and is starting to retrieve nicely now. He is not really interested in canvas dummys when out in the field, but I thought he might retrieve something warm and bloody judging by his reactions when we have brought game home.

Now I know he is going to work I think I will take him to the shooting show and see if I can get a neoprene coat to fit him as his hair is not very thick.

They are funny when they are waiting to fetch and you miss.

Logan is almost regal compared to Leo's mad bramble bashing. OH felt guilty that he missed the pheasant as it was first thing Logan has ever set up, but Logan was pleased with his pigeon to fetch.

I am sure my old springer used to shake his head at me every time I missed :lol:
