colin lad Posted February 6, 2012 Report Share Posted February 6, 2012 following on from the test i did last week i have taken advise from pw members and been out and got some 2.5 inch 14g 7s so went out today to do some more pattern test's. please remember this has been done with my 410 that i cut down from 28inch to 24.5 inch barrels. to start with the carts i tested were as follows, 1/ eley fourten 2 inch 9g 6s with 79 lead shot per shell. 2/ lyalvale 2.5 inch 14g 7s with 196 lead shot per shell. 3/ eley extra long 3 inch 18g 6s with 147 shot per shell. 4/ fiocchi 3 inch 19g 6s with 155 shot per shell. first thing was the 10,15,20 meter test as per last week at 2xsheets of A4 paper taped together with a cross in the middle which was the point of aim for this test. test 1/10 meters 169 shots on paper out of 196 test 2/15 meters 104 shots on paper out of 196 test 3/20 meters 55 shots on paper out of 196 looking at these i think for my gun 15 meters is the best distance IMHO i also tested a 2 inch 9g 6s at 15 meters to see how that looked seemed ok, so for the next set of test's i folded a A4 sheet in half to make a target about the size of a pigeons body or rabbit main body ISH, i tested each cart at 15 meters the distance i found ideal for what i wanted gun for, on 4 of the targets i put the cross in the middle of paper and on the other 4 i put cross on base of paper as they say when shooting at a still target to aim at it's feet so here is the result's 2 inch 9g 6s target with + at foot of paper had 15 hit's, target with + in middle had 27 hits, 2.5 inch 14g 7s target with + at foot had 28 hits, target with + in middle had 27 hits 3 inch 18g 6s target with + at foot had 39 hits, target with + in middle had 29 hits, 3 inch 19g 6s target with + at foot had 23 hits, target with + in middle had 26 hits. so what did i get from this well when it comes to shooting 410's close then bigger is NOT all ways better, i was impressed with the 14g 7s but the 9g 6s were ok too so what i need to find now is some 2 inch 7s to see how they fair, also i found a big difference in noise and recoil with both 3 inch magnums compared to the smaller lighter loads which were nicer to shoot, hope i haven't bored you all too much colin. pic's below Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Underdog Posted February 6, 2012 Report Share Posted February 6, 2012 Excellent range report, goes a long way demonstrating how a long shot colume in a 410 especially can have no benefit. Interesing how the Eley 18g (fibre wad?) compared with the 19g fiocchi (plastic?). I was mucking about with sheets of paper on Saturday using 1/4 choke at 20m. I tested some home made 17g fibre 7s against the 18g Eley fibre 6s and found that I got a nice 2 footish area with what looked like pretty similar coverage. I did an experimental 21g shell in fibre 7s and that was spread all over the place. Didn't count the pellet strikes as I was frozen and just wanted to get home. Keep your reports coming Colin Lad. Underdog Posted February 7, 2012 Report Share Posted February 7, 2012 One load I did a bit with alas not a fan of heavy 410 loads was 16grn of H4227 and 3/4oz of shot.
