henry d
I went out this morning to see if I could get amongst some roe deer that were ravaging some neeps and set off before first light. I set off with the wind in my face and followed the ditch but nothing was out there, possibly because it was all they had during the snow and they were fed up(literally) of them. I then decided to go to another area that has been holding some cull beasts and when I arrived there they were within sight of the farm and didn`t seem to have seen me and the vehicle, they must see a lot here as it is close to a road. I parked up and sneaked along the farm road with lots of dead vegitation and low bushes to conceal me but they took flight and when I came across them 2 fields away they were too far out and moving as though too fast for me to cut them off. I then walked back to the car and decided to try another field where I had shot a nice old barren cull doe last week from a high seat. I glassed the field from over 1/4 mile away and I didn`t see anything but as the wind was in the right direction I new I could stalk along a forestry track just in case any Roe were sitting tight into the fencelines out of the wind. It was now after 9-30am and I held out little hope, but as we know deer don`t have a rule book Just as I was 200yds from the high seat I saw 3 roe, an old doe with a doe and buck twins almost her height, in the field and close to the corner which is why I didn`t see them. I thought they were going to come up to the corner and cross the track back to the woods, so I settled down to wait for them and my heart was belting in my chest as I knew I wouldn`t have more than a few seconds to sort out the old doe from the youngsters and take the shot. Five minutes later I got back up to see they were walking down wind parallel to the track and towards another wood. I followed down the track towards them stopping each time I saw them look up or back towards me, the saplings, brambles and gorse helped me and eventually I managed to get to within 150yds of them and I got the rifle up on the sticks and used the scope to check the cull doe. A minute or two later she turned side on and I slowly squeezed the trigger. The shot rang out and she dropped within 20-30 yds and due to the wood on two sides and because of the sound moderator all hell broke loose. The buck youngster ran off and hurdled the fence into the wood barking intermittently, the young doe ran, stopped, ran back, stopped ran back and forth as all around there seemed to be roe running about and alerting each other. Eventually the young doe ran back to the area of the shot and started to sniff the ground, I later found out there was a lot of blood as I had shot the top off the heart off the old doe. I steadied against the sticks and again let off a shot, she dropped 15-20 yds away ! The old girl was well on her way, as you can see by her teeth and I can`t believe that she ran as far as her heart was shot almost in two. Just goes to show that fortune favours the brave ! henry d
Is it a .222 you use for the roe? Yes and no, I use a .222 sometimes, but it is unmoderated and as the woods are surrounding the fields I thought I would be better off with the 6.5 x 55 as it is modded and it did help by not totally spooking them

I've got a slot for a .223 but I'm half considering changing it as I quite fancy a 'triple' ATB

wildfowler.250
cheers Think I'll ask how easily I can get the two calibers changed...everyone seems to have a .223 (yawn ) and the .222 should do all I need quite nicely
