Cranfield
roadkill, I had one of those things, they must be almost "collectable". They were deadly......... kill a fly at 3 ft.

Fisherman Mike
Bet none of you had a bolt mortar !!! Two six ins. hex head bolts. Each screwed into a single nut with about 20 pistol caps between. Just tightened enough to pinch the caps without setting them off and then thrown up in the air to land with an almighty bang... Dont know youre born these days.....
ernyha
Bet none of you had a bolt mortar !!! Did,so there. In fact even fitted a little parachute on one end to make sure it always landed the right way up.
The Sniper
Roadkill, You entitled this "Old gat gun". I could be mistaken but I think that is a Diana pistol in your picture. The Gat guns had all metal parts, including handles. The picture also brought back memories for me of firing corks, and those deadly, but totally inaccurate darts. Can you still buy those darts in this PC world ??
neil
Its a diana model 2 gat
roadkill
Yes it is a Diana.. Thats where the gat must of come from Grandad gat gun
The Sniper
Neil and Roadkill, But I thought the Gat pistol was a make in its own right. I thought all others, such as Diana, were air pistols ??
neil
The word gat is used to describe a type of pistol, it isnt a make, the type being the barrel being fixed to the piston, thus the barrel travels down the air chamber along with the piston when fired. the first to use the phrase appear to have been T.J Harrington & son (these are what most people think of when they use the term GAT) it could be an abbreviation of the word garanta (a tinplate gat advertised in 1939) or american slang for gun. The above is a post war millard bros diana version of a pre war german diana If you are into this type of thing dennis hillers book on airpistols is the bible
