  1. Forget all the modern contraptions, think of it as sport not science, find a spot, keep still and wait...just wait
  2. If you simply want to kill as many birds as you can then perhaps consider a rotary, flapper, decoys etc etc. If however you are competent and can apply field craft skills then sit in the right place and still kill loads of birds FACT!
  3. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
  4. Makes me realise how lucky I am in and around the Chichester area. You have Chichester Armoury, superb collection of all types of arms, great knowledge and very welcoming. Mindful though that they aren't the cheapest. For air rifles we have Protek, really know there stuff and fairly priced.
  5. Just purchased a new Weihrauch 99s, break barrel .22 Does anyone have any experience of putting a moderator/silencer on one of these, is it going to make a noticeable difference to reducing the sound? Thanks in advance. Bootneck
  6. Thanks Jim for the advice. Actually got myself a new Wehrauch 99s this afternoon. Went for a springer cos 'm used to them from being a kid and frankly didn't want to have to keep refilling with CO2 of Air.
  7. Thanks to both of you, i'm a lot clearer now, gives me a starter when I come to buying one.
  8. If someone could give me a brief explanation as to the pros and cons of differnet types of air rifle a PCP, springer, CO2 etc. I haven't a clue and yes I have read up how they operate but would like opinions on the characteristics of each type. Thanks in advance Bootneck

    mod police

Stuart, hope i'm not too late to add my two pennies worth. I have vast experience of MOD plod. Generally what's been already stated is correct but heres a few other points you should know. They do carry guns, they do work with dogs but generally your not able to do both, imagine try to get a shot off with an alsatian bounding after the suspect. They do tend to often be ex regular coppers who've retired, got their pension and then go for a less stressful time with the MOD, basically they are then coining it. Be warned also they have a tendancy to move you around the counrty, they are a national force unlike your local cops who work within a constabulary and so you can be local if you want. Finally they aren't classed as a Home Office force so they don't get the same pension right, ok it's 35 years from now for those thinking of joining but a huge differnce when you retire. If you are serious consider a local force, they also carry guns, far more chance of using them, thankfully though it's still VERY rare they are actually fired in this country and also work with dogs
  10. I went out today, got nought, so well done to u.

    recession

Sadly redundancies are starting to occur around here, both from large and small firms. Belt tightening time me thinks!
  14. For what it's worth, simple wring of the neck for everything that flies or hops. As for priests, second shots, bashing against trees, pliers (heard it all now) if you can't do the job manually then frankly don't shoot it, go beating instead.
  15. Simple - i'm an ex bootneck. Some will know what it means and some won't but with my memory being what it is I need something simple and that means something to me!!!

    ac/dc

Well Im due to see them at the O2 in April and really hope they play a lot of the older stuff as opposed to their latest offering.
  17. Being a Sussex lad myself I can vouch that down here permissions are generally, not exclusively however, tied up with small fee paying syndicates. I rang loads of farms and found that local pillers of the community had organised a rough shoot with colleagues and were paying the local landowner just for rough shooting, so of course the likes of myself who won't didn't get a look in. I was lucky that I had connections and have estates to shoot on but in general it's all sown up down here and sadly money talks.
  18. As others have said, simply grasp bird by the head with one hand and the body with the other and sharp twist NOT pull, otherwise it becomes detached and messy. The twist will snap the neck in an instant.
  19. The best - Led Zep at the O2 - superb and historic For consistantly brilliant, Motorhead, haven't changed much in 30yrs, great every time.
  20. Oops good point Lewismac. I should have made it clear I have plenty of land to work on but only a small garden for any dog when not out shooting. Thanks for the response
  21. Firstly let me be clear I have virtually no idea which dog would be the best for me and hope those more experienced can give me some advice. I have a small garden, hence I need a small dog that can flush out and if possible retrieve small vermin for me, pigeon and rabbit etc. I don't see me digging or sending it down any holes just simply using my 12 bore. Oh I grew up around Jack Russells and think they're great but I know they can be difficult to control and the last thing I want is for me to spend most of my day out chasing it across field and dale. So does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help Bootneck
  22. Just a quick hello from a newbie ( to this this site that is). Been shooting since a kid. Got a thousand odd acres from two estates in this area (Chichester), just go for pigeon and vermin and alike using a 12 bore. A very informative site indeed.
