  1. Hmmm... Looks pretty similar to me. Magnification is a question which is not easily resolved. I prefer large mag for 1000 yard target work, and field shooting 8-10 is generally enough. I shoot a Nightforce 8-32 on my 308 target gun, and it's generally on 32x.
  2. I am with Jonathan on this one! Load of utter tosh - guns are perfectly legal on a train. There is the matter of the discretion of the operating company, but you are not issued with the conditions of carriage when you board the train, so it is not reasonable to expect you to comply with them since you have had no opportunity to see them! In terms of safety - reasonable precautions. For me that is locking gun case and trigger lock, possibly bolt in pocket with you at all times in teh case of a rifle. But as for not doing it, and all talk of 'it's daft' WHY?! When I was 15 I took my CZ in to school on the train for afternoon shooting - no issues at all!
  3. Barnardo's did an advert about a year or so ago, portraying a bunch of shotgun shooters as a major threat to children. Iirc, they were meant to be pedophiles. Ridiculous and did get basc complaint.
  4. that is also my experience - I think people need to be real nutjobs to react badly to a firearm in general, but i have had people saying they can't do the killing of small furry animals. And that's fair enough, so long as they're not arguing with me while tucking in to a meat-based meal!!
  5. 223 from a 5.56 no problem - I just got back from the USA where I spent a lot of time Playing with reloading for my brother's 5.56 smith and Wesson. Shoots a 53gr vmax very well!
  6. I think you'll find the average man on the street thinks nothing of the sort. All people I speak to about shooting seem reasonably interested and many would like a go. Red tape makes that prohibitively hard. The media portrays us as scum (see barnardo's advert for an example) and the government wants to make sure we cannot overthrow their dictatorship. The average bloke is pretty gun friendly!
  7. Proof please, by PM if necessary. Many thanks.
  8. Um, there are plenty of optics which don't have Chinese glass in them! (the good ones!)
  9. That's a real, real shame. I love Adenbourne, most of my guns have come from them over the years because they always did me a good deal. Really sorry to hear that.
  10. If you are talking target work then that is true. But for expanding ammo, the bullet counts. So an RFD will sell you one box, and that's it - you need your allowance increasing.
  11. Crikey that's a light load, I load 25.3 with an 80gr!
  12. I would like to see a genesis, but my Viper was ****, and I'll not trust them until I see evidence otherwise.
  13. Oh dear lord. Wind your neck in chap. FMJ is perfectly good on a rabbit - you shoot the bloody things with an air rifle for crying out loud!
  14. To those weighing Hornet charges - STOP! You are wasting time. I tried this with H110 many moons ago, my powder thrower is so consistent with ball powder there is simply no need to weigh. 1/2 inch @ 225 yards can't be wrong.
  15. Varget is too slow for 223 with light bullets. Benchmark is a good powder, as is h4895, n130 or 133. The 40 vmax isn't a great bullet for longer ranges. If you want something that won't annihilate a rabbit, FMJ should do, but stick with head or accurate heart shots as they really do no damage.
  16. I wouldn't look any further than a Meopta. They're excellent scopes at a reasonable price point.
  17. What load were you testing with the 40gr? It always did like the 35s :-)
  18. Not quite sure why it is that you can't understand this concept. But let's try again shall we.... The law says that an offence is committed if: (2)If a person without lawful authority or excuse— (b)discharges any firearm or firework within 50 feet of the centre of such a highway, and in consequence a user of the highway is injured, interrupted or endangered, that person is guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.]" It's very clear. Is it particularly stupid to try to apply this law to a motorway which is more than 50 feet from the centre to the edge of the highway? Yes, kinda. The key point is that with a road that big, you are not likely to cause any issue with road users if you stand at the edge of the boundary where your permission intersects with public land (ie the highway) since the road is so large. If you start sending bullets/shot into the road, you have the issue of shooting on land without permission. The law is very simple in regard to shooting near a highway, it's been explained many times just on this particular thread! I am quite happy to explain the law to an FEO that doesn't know it, and I really struggle to see how obeying the letter of the law could be grounds for you to consider my ticket in need of revocation. Just what do you think is so bad standing on land over which I have permission to shoot, and then firing a firearm on that land, immediately next to the road? It is perfectly legal, since it's over 50 feet and nobody is affected in any way.
  19. It's 50 feet, not 50 yards. I am annoyed that you suggest that going back to the Act is grounds not to have a firearm! Complete and utter codswallop. The interpretation of Law is a subjective point generally, but in this case Jonathan is completely right. The centre is the centreline on a highway, and a road user does have to be affected by the shooting for an offence to be committed. This is an absolute, it's written in law and nobody can say otherwise. There is an argument to be had as to whether the road user has been affected, but that is all.
  20. As has been posted, the carriageways form the highway. The centre of this on a motorway is the central reservation. So i would observe your own advice! Is the law daft? Yes it is, a frequent occurrence. Does if really matter to anyone? No! Not really for motorways anyway. You could get into an argument for country lanes and horses and things, but motorways? No! Let's be frank here, unless you actually shot someone on the motorway, people go by so fast they won't notice anyway!
  21. Harder wearing? Hmmm... Gunsmiths I talk to say that they prefer working with stainless because it's easier to machine, so I don't think it can also be harder wearing. Corrosion resistant I'll give you mind!
  22. Leicestershire are wrong, any other legal quarry would cover you fine to shoot deer. They are correct in that the wording was introduced to achieve, as they say, the shooting of 'lesser' quarry. I.e. I have a cannon to shoot red deer, but I want to annihilate a rabbit. However, the FAC is a literal document, so if it says any other legal quarry, that's what it means, full-stop. However, since they seem more reasonable than many, we should let them be!!
  23. I compared my 5.5-22x56 NXS to my Schmidt 8x56, both set to 8x mag. NF was as good or better than, and very reliable.
  24. You don't have to store the bolt separately, but some do.
