  1. Just thought i would share the news that I/we just aquired about another 10+ acres of land in monmouth and it has proved to me that land is around for the taking, but due to the nature of some people and how they behave farmers/landowners are very very reluctant to offer it out to new faces.

Quality post but that really sums up the reason some struggle.

Great pics and well done OTH

  2. There is real issues with this subject all with PROS and CONS

But in my time as a shooter it has become clear there too many keepers etc who think they are gods not all but most.

But the fact is that the landowner is the king I have know on one shoot who lost there cracking game rights over the farmers children playing in the fields and the keeper giving them a ear full .

I know that leasing game rights makes you have some rights over things but the truth you still dont own the land so is very hard to dictate the goings on.

Also some shoots say they going to control vermin and they dont which inturn if said shooter turns up and says he is going straight away sort the rabbits out of course he is going to let them go.

We all know a trusted shooter can perform good vermin control within the game season with out damage to game .

Yes you can shoot pigeons without upsetting pheasants even though ever keeper will say it not poss thats why when we shot pigeons we have a herd of pheasants in the deeks.

The days of victorian keepers has gone even though some still think thay can dicate to us.

The final word on my permissions goes to farmer not anybody else if he tells me to stop then I will stop.

    Regards OTH

  3. I have roughly 20000 hectares to shoot range across oxon wilts and gloucester I us to work for a major agri contractor who has a brother who is also a contractor and landowner .

And they have a massive amount hectares alone they farm and that can vary from year to year when they lose and gain land.

I think in my area that alot of pigeon shooter have given up I have not seen another shooter in a field for over six months .

Alot of them are builders and with a lack of work equals a lack of cash to spend on cartridges .

    Regards OTH

  4. ALot of people on my shoot put udder cream on their feet and they reckon its the best stuff for the job!

Thats the stuff coopers quality hand cream.

I may have a spare tub in the shed if I can find it I will post it to the thread starter for free.

    Regards OTH

  5. A stroke of luck today after a bad start driving 20 miles to a new permission only to find I had forgotten the graft .

Drove back home needed a pee pulled over in gate way near home on land I got permission only to see 15 or rabbits down the side of hedgerow .

A qucik recce to see the roadside was ferretable and safe no drains etc.

Whizzed back home got the graft back at the roadside within 10 mions.

Nets on 7 out of the first bury great done about 500 yards and the days total of 42 with still anothe 1000 yards of burys to do.

The one thing I would say is all my top bags have been roadsides and It hink the reason is that the buries are not as big or busy with laots of stops for the rabbits to layup in.

Which inturn makes them easy to bolt as the rabbits bolted with 2 mins of the ferts goin in.

Roll on next week 9 days of ferretting and pigeons bashing.

    All the best OTH

  6. Bales are the best bet if the hedge does not allow you the legal 50ft away from the centre of the road.

How busy is the lane I think it hard to drive birds from there prefered area even with bags .

They will more than likely move fields more than move to there not prefered area in said field.

Aslo which way the wind blows can dictate your actions you really need it coming over the lane so the birds go over you and turn back in.

    Regards OTH

  7.:good::yes: think you could get one pretty reasonable at this time of the "credit crunch" as they are all needing work .

So get a few quotes ,A friend of mine wanted there three story house done the cheapest I could do it was 1,500 but told them to tell another guy that I would do it for 1,200 ................anyway they undercut that and done the full house for a 1,000 ..desperate times and all ,good luck

Thats one of the reasons the work in the trade is going down the toilet.

If you keep undercutting then you are under vaule your own time and outlay which in turns means you will go under.

Thats what the ploes are doing in our area now the geninue builder are going under taking there local tradesmens with them.

    Not good OTH

  8. Chard I have no reason to offend yourself but you seem to have taken it that way I have not quoted or ref to you or your post direct .

But after rereading your post I can see why but without knowing the full facts I cannot comment as my post was a general statment not aimed at you .

Sorry if I have offened you OTH

  9. That doesn't make it any ******* easier to do without it :good:

It's also totally irrelevant, as I now earn CONSIDERABLY less than £25K a year

Yes my point was that the the money problems have been caused by the high earners living to the max of there wage .

Homes cars etc now when they have lost there 100k plus job then they have struggled to find a job with the same wage.

But if the average wage earner say 15k 20k job it is not as hard to find another job within that wage band.

I just think that if your job can afford you a 6 grand or 25 grand pay cut you have not been savy with your good income and prepared for bad times.

Also if you say have had to take 25 grand pay cut what more relevant is what percentage of your original wage .

    Regards OTH

  10. I cant belive some of the of the paycuts being aired on here .

25k pay cut that must be harsh but most dont even earn 25 k .

Having said that this year was must first year as self employed with some part time 18 hrs regular for a local warehouse firm.

I work for myself as a landscaper tree work area there is no shortage of work as most seem to be over charging by thousands in there business .

I quoted a job the other day that was approx a days work for two £500 the the next lowest was 3 grand.

I am qualified and propley insured and trained no cowboy hats here and can not see the prices some trades are giving .

I have earned a very good wage self employed and what I have found IMO is what one persons not been a good year comment ,is anothers mega wage.

A bit like a poor old arable farmer who claims it a tough life and crys on your shoulder when you ask him for some shooting.

Resting on the door of a 30k rangie outside a barn conversion he has just sold for 500k.

Also I would be intrested in what market you have recevied a pay rise or cut .

    OTH

  11. If we brought back national service it would kill two birds with one stone on firearms handling problems.

As would show how to treat firearms with respect and also treat others with respect .

And at the same time solvle a whole lot of social promblems but thats anothe threas all together.

    Regards OTH

  12. Not long until they start drilling the peas (assuming it stops raining soon)

Thats being hopeful beans maybe peas your be lucky .

Very little land preperation going on yet but it been the best ploughing conditions I have had in my very short time of driving 20 years.

The ground has really broken p with the hard frosts perfect and in our area dry untill today.

    Back to a little hedgetrimming.

    Regards OTH
