  1. Personally I dont see anything wrong with wanting a gun to look and feel a certain way. It's a stage I went through. I like to poke fun at the people who buy the old style lumps of wood myself. I mean, get with the times!
  2. Open sights I'm no where near as good but with the little fixed x4 I have on it I can get better than 2" groups. Interesting info. Thanks mate.
  3. Hale but my permissions are all up towards Chester
  4. I bought a Marlin years ago for fun in the range (cowboy type underlever). It fires 38 special and .357. More theory than practice right now but with a basic sight I can put bullet after bullet in 2p size group at 25 yards free hand and as my land is starting to get overrun with foxes I was wondering if this gun would at a pinch make for a foxing rifle. For that I guess I would demand the same accuracy at 100 yards. Its obviously unmoderated so very loud and having only punched paper with it I dont fully understand the balistics or even range of the weapon. Anyone give me some basics or advice? Obviously I know I'd have to make sure the land stands the calibre as well.
  5. GSG's are nice bits of kit with just as many customising options as the Ruger but with a better standard look. As said above though, serious thought needs to be given to what your using it for. In my opinion, having owned one, its strictly a range plinker. Always felt a bit of a c0ck taking it out into the field!
  6. Pretty much anything considered for a rabbit problem I have! I'd like to do a face to face to make the transfer easy so whilst I have said the Cheshire area, anywhere with 45 minutes on the m6 or M56 is fine.
  7. I've got a couple of fields used for horses with fern and hedge banks riddled with bunnies. Trying to be as quiet as I can I walking slowly to a corner and set up a very basic basha looking down a hedgerow. The basha is one small pole with a small camo net then pegged into the groud to give me a low concelaed a frame tent like thing. I set my gun up looking down the hedgerow and then usually, depending on how quiet I was setting up they start drifting out in two and three's after 20 minutes. I find alot depends on my initial approach. If I keep it stealthy and low key they are less disturbed. If my big stupid brother comes with me and clomps out through the field, smashes his pegs in to hold up the aframe, it will be 40 minutes before we see anything. Once in situ though and your little hide becomes part of the sceneray, its usually a steady stream! I'm not convinced bunnies are as sensitive to scent as say a fox and I find its all about the noise you make and not so much being up or down wind!
  8. Not a fan at all having owned one but now converted to mainly shooting in the field. Like a lot of guns I found it preferred certain ammo especially if I was fun plinking with a large capacity mag! I settled on either stingers or mini mags and that seemed to work faultlessly! Better than a lot of the GSG and Heckler & Koch clones floating around our club! I made a few of the changes people have suggested above but it didnt improve the gun that much as far as I was concerned for range plinking! Accuracy was nothing like my bolt action Annie!
  9. Does all depend on your budget. If you can afford it then I completely agree with the previous reply! I've just swapped my SAK for a very expesnive LEI. A bit smaller, no quieter! You have to live with the sonic crack of the HMR and thats all there is to it. CZ is a lovely looking version, I have the Savage thumbhole which I highly recommend and would probably only consider swapping that for an Annie!
  10. If its a PCP it has to be empty. There are rules about transporting pressuring containers! Other than that, Ive sent and received two or three in the last month!
  11. Thats really interesting because I've got the same Savage HMR (love it) and I went through a similar process. Cant recall the make of Nikko I had but I found it average at distances over 60 yards and then as the sun started to come down I lost my image very early compared to my shooting buddy and his Leupold. In the end I swapped for a leo. Obviously another price bracket but for dusk shooting and at the kind of distance a HMR is good for, its a good balance of quality against price for that gun! Hope that helps! Uttings have the best prices as well and some on sale I think!
  12. Thats all fair enough but XTX I know for sure has a waiting list for his work and people are signing up for his project mods before they are even ready. As I said, not doubting JB's credentials just saying he isn't some BSA god!
  13. Lol. Sheer snobbery! Check out what I've said and make your opinion from an informed position at least! At least 2 others as recommended and skilled!
  14. Darrin at XTX Air. I've messages you his website. There are 2 others but I'd personally recommend him. There are a few ready tuned ones out there that are cheaper than buying new an tuning!
  15. I understand what your saying but the BSA world is far bigger than JB and to suggest only one person is an expert is a mistake. 10 minutes on the BSAOG forum would demonstrate there are some very skilled and experienced engineers doing advanced work on the BSA rifles. Many doing identical tasks, some doing more advanced some offerring things JB doesn't and in the cases of the two main guys, the same gurantee on the work. They arent enthusiastic amateurs, they know there stuff!
  16. There are 2 or 3 other people on the BSAOG forum offerring an identical service for better prices. I've just had an Ultra regulated and 'refined' and as well as almost doubling the shot count its a completely different gun! Well worth the money.
  17. Cheers guys. Good input. I'm leaving it be!
  18. Yeah I saw that! Cheers guys. I guess in theory if your lossing some velocity you will get it a bit quieter as well? Although its such a small reduction probably not! MMMMM!! Food for thought!
  19. Now thats a fantastic test. Thanks for that mate. Just help me interpret that information a little. What its basically saying is that the drop in velocity is so low and the actual fluctuation between shots at my proposed length of 13" is so minimal, as long as the shortening is done correctly there should be no effect on accuracy?
  20. Sorry that was a type. They couldnt gurantee it wouldnt lose accuracy. I only shoot up to 150 with the HMR. If I can take 3" off and it still bebang on at that distance I'd do it but just wondered if anyone else had done something similar. I trust this RFD implicitly!
  21. I love my Savage HMR and its deadly accurate but a little ungainly to move around the land rover with sometimes. I've already changed my SAK mod to the smaller LEI but I started at looking at getting the barrel shortened. Its 16" and my RFD said they would only be willing to take it down to 13" and they could gurantee that wouldnt effect accuracy. Anyone shortened a HMR in this way or have any thoughts on how it might effect the accuracy? Obviously wont even consider it if it spoils the gun. I'd rather it be a bit incovenient than inaccurate!!
  22. Went out on one of my permissions last night just to check what might be getting cut in the next week or so and found one big field had been cut for hay. I'd chucked my favourite .22 in the back seat just in case and as the sun started to set a lovely looking fox popped out of the undergrowth infront of me and started wandering along the hedgerow. By the time I got set he was on the limits of what I consider an accurate shot for a .22 and although I'm very confident of my accuracy with the annie, I'd never taken a .22 shot at a fox before. Mainly because over the years my shooting buddy who kinda of trained me up always said it wasn't 'man enough' for the job. Charlie just stopped to take one last look at me giving a lovely side on profile and with my POI about 2 inches above his ear I popped one nice and clean through his brain box. He dropped like a stone and was a very clean kill. I paced 104 yards out to him. I was very pleased with the shot and packed up there and then on the theory I wasn't going to improve on that but I was suprised at the stopping power of the .22. I guess shot placement was crucial here and another 5 yards and I woudnlt have even taken the shot on. 2 foxes this year so far and m y oermisison is teeming with them! Not so many bunnies anymore though and perhaps thats why!
  23. Yeah I bought a few hundred when Winchester were out of stock and wasnt a fan!
  24. In theory I would say you will find them shooting higher but in practice when Ive done similar I have found some shooting in an identical fashion and some completely different. You really have to try them to really know. I have found CCI stingers and Winchester subs shoot identically through my Anschutz, which was a suprise!
