  1. Fantastic reply mate. Thanks It's a particularly nice Ruger with a rubber hogue stock and I did wander why someone would have traded it in. Will go through the steps you described an failing that back to the shop
  2. I think I have some kind of problem with my Ruger .22 setup. Its a 2nd hand gun that has a target barrel. Ive put on a Nikko STerling scope and zeroed it at 25 yards and it gives me an under 1" group as you would expect. I take it out into the field and go straight out to 75 yards (my ideal vermin range) and I seem to be all over the place. I know it coul dbe lots of things but just wondered if any of the old hands can tell me the sequence they would logically check? I havent ruled out that the barrel isn't fitted correctly and it needs to go back. Just strange its fine at 25 yards! Remove and refit scope and rail making sure all is tight, rezero at 25 yards and this time perhaps at 25 first before pushing out to 75. Anything else?
  3. Had 3 outings before specifically looking for a troublesome fox that has been maiming the new lambs but tonight I popped a bunny early doors from the landy and over a brook and decided it was too tough to retrieve. Later on I returned to the spot and flashed my lamp over it only to find 5 pairs of little eyes mooching around the bunny. About 70 yards out under the lamp one stuck up his head for a good long look and I put a 17 grain HMR round straight into his forehead! Was too busy faffing around to get another shot off and missed the chance of bagging 2. Strange feeling. I wandered over to check my shot placement and was excited about my first fox kill, pleased with my humane dispatch but couldnt help feeling a little guilty about killing the cub. Would have rather my first have been some wiley old vixen!!
  4. People who have had it done are claiming an increase from 35 to 50 shots per fill to close to 100 with far more consistency for each shot. Now that sounds like money well spent, unless I've missread that! vERY NEW TO pcp Air riles!
  5. Ah now that is a good site for this rifle! I can see a regulator is 2nd on my list of mods!
  6. lol. Sheer genius! I like that a lot! Often wanted to try this but thought it woul dnever specialst and expensive kit but that looks achievable at a budget price!
  7. I'm just in a similar position so whilst I'm no expert I've read a lot. I'm looking at a BSA Ultra because I like the look, the price is right and I'm seeing a lot of people reporting good results up to 50 yards with 35 being a good killing range. The rile can be modified with an air regulator which takes the published fill to shot count of 35 to 50 to something more like 100 and makes each shot more consistent. That mod costs about £120. There are lots of rifles out there that do very similar things but having looked at them all this is nice and compact and people claim its very accurate. Hope that helps. I'm planning on buying one for me and one for my brother in the next month with a 7 litre gas bottle. Currently negotiating price with my gunsmith!
  8. On the verge of buying a BSA Ultra Tactical and reading the Gunmart reviews it seems the supplied SAS moderator is a bit week. I'm not big into my air rifles. Can anyone recommend me somehting that might be a better choice for this rifle?
  9. No sorry its quarterly. Dont know whay I said monthly! As a principle of decoying it sounded to simple and good to be true. If I can find an owl cheaply enough might give it a go. The nest and egg thing sounded stupid to me but at the moment I'm consdiering any and all hair brained schemes!
  10. Anyone read the articale on decoying crow and magpies in this months BASC mag? Gave me a few ideas for decoying and I'm half thinking about buying an owl decoy, maybe a few maggies, already got my flocked crows and then making a nest for my hens eggs! Question is before I launch into this full tilt as I usual do with new advice, is it realisitc? Is an owl decoy (that looks a bit ****) and a home made next with a broken egg in it really going to attract crows and magpies? My permissions are almost barren right now and I'm desperate for some sport of any kind. The BASC article is talking baout air rifles but I guess it owul dapply to .22 rifles or even the shotgun!
  11. I've only ever had shotguns and low calibre rifles but a new permission offers excellent rabbit shooting but air rifle only. I know very little about air rifles and weighing up price and I'm ashamed to say the look, I quite like the BSA Ultra Tactical. Does anyone have one of these who is an experienced air gunner and can tell me what its like, what kind of effective range etc? I'm looking at .177 and new I can get it for £400. Just seems a nice compact rifle and not too flash!
  12. Yep got that. How much emphasis on camo? My brothers considering ghillie type suits (not quite that extreme but close) is it worth that much effort? We are right inbetween hedges and trees so its fairly good now
  13. All my permissions seem a bit quiet right now and I have one with my brother thats a nice long strip of woodland rising up slightly at the edges to pasture land. Really night tall established sittie tree's and what woul dbe great roost shooting. We've been talking about roost shooting for a while and although its not really the right time, everything else was so quiet we thought we would give it a go. Really enjoyed the field craft part of it and humping through the woods to a good spot we even stumbled on a few bunny warrens. As it happens we only saw a few and in 2 hours only had a few kills but they were both fast reaction shots and despite no big bag the whole 2 hours was a lot of fun. Looking forward to learning this skill and getting some better camo. Anyone a roost shooting expert and can offer some tried and tested tips? On this evening the wind was blowing hard into the woods and our faces so that wasn't ideal. Our cam was very basic and we used two bouncers about 15 metres out of the hedgerow but wasn't sure if we should use any or more?
  14. What about decoys and other equipment? I know the basic principle of roost shooting but just gained a new permission today with a 10 acre roosting wood. Dying to get in there but never done it before. Just walked it now and it's buzzing with crows an pigeon. Great slope and thick hedge on the edges. Perfect!
  15. Yeah that's the ATM I saw. Good for cleaning I guess but doesn't seem to clamp the rifle down so might not be that stable!
  16. There are a few on the market. This is the cheapest I've found that might be up to holding a rimmy securely http://www.solwayfeeders.com/products/added/1/rifle-bench-vice-for-zeroing-scope-p5015-c452.html# Deben and ATM do versions but are more expensive an don't look much better
  17. Lol. Yeah that must be it!!! Which end of the scope does the rod go down?
  18. No they don't and that's my other problem. Having different scopes doing different things!
  19. lol. Mainly talking .22 and .17HMR but I also have a .357 range gun I wanted to try it on. Strapping that down may be in order although I have stumbled on a specific gun vice/rest for zeroing that I might look at getting!
  20. Cool. Thanks for that. Will give it a try then! Might be the answer and I might get better at the whole process as a result!
  21. I think its because I do it so infrequently and because I'm really not that good at doing it! I find myself losing track of what I'm trying to achieve based on my last shot and I can take as many as 30 rounds to get it right. It is just technique and experience I'm sure but I've started swapping scopes to meet some NV requirements and its just becoming a pain to get it right quickly. Just looking for a better/easier way and hopefully the experience will come!
  22. Yeah your right and I did enjoy this at one time. What I find now is that with small kids at home shooting trips happen less and I want to spend my time shooting and not zeroing!
