Firstly, what's a bore guide? Secondly, it's evident my cleaning kit is rubbish and I need to spend proper money on it if I'm gonna do it right! Back to the drawing board!

After debates on here about how to clean a HMR I decided to try something different than my usual run through with a bore snake to see if all the comments about my method were right or wrong. Just wondered if someone can give me an idea of how they go about it? I have bought a rod and some patches and I seem to be having a problem even pushing the rod in with a bronze or with patches. I've clean my .22 with rod and patches (rarely) and never had this At first I thought you might all be right and the barrel is clogged or fouled but it puts bullet after bullet in the same hole at 100 yards and the bore snake passes through OK. I think I might have bought a **** rob set!

I've got the same rifle. Best I've owned by a country mile. I've found mine to be quite ammo fussy though and it hates any type of CCI.

I had the fully moderated bretton and Gaucher, marketed as the stealth by McAvoys in Standish. About £300 brand new. I was dissapointed at first as it sounded noisey to me and defintely needed the magnum cartridges to be any use. The I let my brother have a go in the next field and I discovered that to the shooter it sounds quite loud but the sound doesn't travel. It sounds like a springer air rifle if your 10 yards or more away. 75 yards away and youll barely hear it!

I wouldnt disagree however the maunfacturers claim 6ftlbs and both the one's Ive owned produced virtually that when chronoed. As I said they punched paper at 15 metres but bounced off wood fences at the same range!
-
They are all about 6ftlbs and pretty much only good for paper punching or very short range rat blasting. Ive had a couple and got bored with them pretty quickly. The basic configuration is either an auto style or the old wheel gun Dan Wesson type gun. Of the two the Smith an Wesson wheel gun type seem to be far more accurate and easier to shoot shot after shot because you dont have to strain so much to pull the trigger and cock the mechanism. They are also a bit heavier and have longer barrels. Just dont look as good! About £130 new and £80 2nd hand.

But thats how your comment could be interpreted! You cant poke at him saying youve interpreted his comments in such a way and then not accept that you are guilty of the same thing! I certainly read your initial post as a threat to report (still do based on this last post) but also thought the initial post from Vipa was firearms blase, although not quite as bad as people seem to be making out!! Bored with this thread now. That is all

I see the interpretation of your original mail and kinda see where people are coming from mate. It wasn't worded very well and did suggest things I dont think you meant. Because you wrote it not meaning it that way, you are never going to appreciate how we are all reading it. I know this because I've done it myself! However I completely see your point about the FAO comments and being reported. If you love your sport and you obviously do that kind of comment will feel threatening is unnecessary, is plain out of order and frankly none of Horrocks business in the context of this debate. But lets not hijack the thread with side arguement about interpretation of comments. I'm a big fan of military style .22 kit. Ive found my interest short lived but they are cool bits of kit to play with in the range!

An it will miss feed after 15 anyway. Better fix bayonets if you want to get it right!

Here's my real time experience of this. Judge as you will. Been shooting shotguns for years but got into rifles 2 years ago at my local range, so relatively inexperienced time wise. This quickly led to vermin control permissions. I bought an MP5 look alikey for the range but as it was a .22 it was also allowed on my shooting permission. I had both 30 round mags (6 of) and a 50 round drum. I must admit I was amazed these were even available! I had a lot of fun paper punching at the range with it. If you can find mass produced .22 ammo reliable enough to put 30 through a gun your doing well. 50 is virtually impossible! (just a side comment) I hesitated to take it on to my shooting permission for fear of its agressive look but when I eventually did one farmer loved it and was interested, one wasn't over keen. Over 50 yards it was rubbish and after 4 trips out it never hit the field again. After a dozen trips to the range it bored me and it went to be replaced by a .357 under lever Marlin (Cowboy gun) In summary, I do think they portray the wrong image for shooters, I personally dont believe you should be allowed them in the field and you should have to be a member of a range where they can be used. Ive found them to be gimicky and of limited fun/use.

Best response so far! Kind of see the original point but there is a bigger picture here!

I'm a newbie member and I cant access that thread. Can you give me a summary?

When you say red do you mean the rotating centre part which is blue on both the guns I have!

Ah top stuff! Thanks mate.

Having played with temporary camo wraps I want to spray paint a couple of rile stocks. Ive seen youtube tuition videos and seen various people on various forums who have had good results. My problem is I'm not the most artistic person and I'm struggling to get some kind of camo template and to find the right paint, which I believe is something called Krylon for the synthetic stocks anyway. Dont suppose anyone knows of suppliers of either?

Me and my brother bough one each at the same time. So far Ive put a dozen different types through mine to find the best performing and mine has performed faultlessly. My brothers used 2 different type of pellets and his has been playing up from day one. Just a bad mag from the start I guess!
-
Seems like silly money to me and this one did seem to break very easily! Loving the multishot but have read a lot about it being unrliable in the mag area!
-
Me and my brother bought this gun at the same time and he has somehow managed to break his mag within a week of getting the gun. He thinks he might have tried to load a pellet when there was already one in and the forced the mag out somehow breaking the stop in the mag. Anyway, I cant believe how pricey the mags are and the cheapest Ive seen for the .177 is £38.99. Anyone have a good supplier of BSA mags they can recommend?
-
Well I fancied a change and no one has said its any worse so as its lighter and smaller and my local gunsmith has a 2nd hand one in Ive gone for it! Lets see how I get on. Rubbish that you have to sell your existing mod then apply for the one for one variation before you can get it. Hate being without the HMR.

Any guide as to how many refills you might expect from a 7 litre bottle for a gun like the Ultra?
-
I'd never considered that. It's never even ocurred to me to put the snake down that way! I've had some banter with people on this subject in general and when you just consider the physical act and action of the bore snake against a rod, I really dont get the fuss. The contact of the brass jag and the swab are going to be, if anything, more consistent and concentrated than a rod and in the wrong hands a rod can do more damage than good! Ah well. Each to there own! Might put another thousand through my HMR and find a few flyers and be eating my words.
-
Dont really agree with you and Ive seen no evidence with my personal experience to suggest otherwise. I am only shooting rimfires though!
-
Seriously a 10p group is easily enough for my quarry at that range. Some people are old school and dont want to think there might be another way! I have my method, it works, I'm happy! Probably need to give it much better clean at some stage but havent found it yet!
-
Lol you appear not to have read my post! Why would I do anything other than use the bore snake in the way I describe above if I can group shots like that using my current cleaning method?? Maybe my rifle is just better than yours??!?
-
I love my Savage HMR and shoot with it on and off and have probably put 1000 rounds through it from new. It has only ever been cleaned with a bore snake and still is the most accurate rifle I have giving me consistent 10p size groups at up to 100 yards. I tend to run the snake through twice, conduct a visual inspection and run it through again if not satisfied and then I spray some oil on the end of the snake and run it through twice more. Every other time its used I give the bolt a good clean and the area around the firing pin without going too overboard or stripping anything down too far. When I first fire it next time its a little bit smokey on the first shot. I guess burning any surface coat of oil in the barrel but then is perfect. Not saying this is right or wrong just saying thats what seems to work for me. Maybe I havent put enough through it to tell if my shortcut approach to cleaning is doing any long term damage or effecting accuracy.
