  1. Ah, suprised it took that long! It doesn't say I cant zero, it says I have problems zeroing and want to be better at it! Thanks for your input though!
  2. Yeah I understand it won't really be one shot but will be close! More interested in if anyone does this an how they achieve a firm base for the rifle?
  3. I dont know why but I always have problems zeroing my riles and I wanted to work on making the process less time consuming and frustrating. I read about one shot zeroing where you get your rifle on a rock solid base, some kind of rile rest, hit the target and then without moving the rile move the crosshairs to the point of impact and that should be it albeit with a few final tweaks! Does anyone have an opinion on this (without taking the **** out of my basic zeroing ability) and more importantly suggest a decently priced rifle clamp/rest whatever you want to call it. I have some sand bag rests but they dont hold the rile anywhere near enough to let me tweak the scope dials without moving the rifle!
  4. Savage is giving me a touch under 1 inch groups at 100 yards. I dare say I could push it back further but I tend not shoot much over that on my permission.
  5. Best bet is a friendly pigeon watch member near to you willing to give a demo of his setup
  6. Have you not looked at the Savage HMR? They have a great range and probably fall somewhere between CZ and the Annie on the perceived quality scale. I have the Savage HMR and the .22 Annie. I'd say quality was very similar and my Savage thumbhole laminate HMR is the most sold feeling and accurate rifle I own. Adjustable 2 stage trigger is fantastic
  7. I think your gonna find this very hard to do. As many threads on here will say, its an area with lots of challenges and issues and you cant really do it cheaply in any way. For that reason I dont think the shops will want to advertise the frailities or show the actual cost of a half decent setup. I asked for lots of input from guys on here who are actually doing it and found that the best way to find out what will and wont work and the kind of results you will get!
  8. Been back to the range tonight an 100% confirmed what I said originally. Got pictures and sounds so if I can work out how will post em all in the morning! His moderator seemed to have fibre inside it but when u said you lot had poured scorn on his mod he got very protective of it!
  9. I have to say that mag sounds more than fine to me. Anything else is borderline overkill on a .22. Cant say I havent had similar problems though. More when I was pushing out to 75 yards or out to 120 with the HMR. I tried a spotting scope if it was the result of a shot you wanted to see. That was a bit of a pain, so much so you can have my spotting scope for a bargain price if you want to try for yourself! In the end I got some shoot and see targets. A coloured halo appears around the bullet strike to make it clear where youve hit. Different colours the closer you get to the bull. If its a matter of not seeing a bullseye at x9 magnification in daylight then youve got a whole other set of problems methinks!
  10. I'm not sure I really agree. My snake has a section of jag that's larger than the jag on my rod and I was my boresnake in the washer inside an old sock once a week. When I use my snake I pull it through each barrel 3 times and I can't see any difference from rodding it on .22, .17 or my shotguns.
  11. I must have a magic bore snake!!
  12. Ah that might explain it then! Have to take a brick of mini mag as well then for another test!
  13. I've been reporting your comments back to the old guy who made this all week!! He's steaming with you all..... I wont pretend to understand the logistics but I'm sure of the ammo used and of the mod I had and his homemade mod. Preparing to record sounds and take pics tomorrow night! Just so I'm clear are we saying that a standard .22 round travels at supersonic speed and a subsonic round by its own description travels at subsonic speeds? If thats the case I dont understand what a .17HMR is. I know that goes supersonic because of the boom and the fact a mod does little to disguise it. I know that a standard round goes through my mod in an indoor range with a subdued crack but nothing like the HMR. I assume that a mod cant take velocity off the bullet to the standard round is travelling at subsonic speeds?
  14. lol. Rubbish! I really don't see how a proper bore snake with brass jags cleans any worse than a rod. If anything you get more consistent contact and because its less hassle you can pull it through more times and more often than a full clean. OK, slight chance of it breaking but if you buy a good snake you should be fine. I always think this is just old school shooters (no offence to old school shooters ) on the basis if its quick and easy it must be rubbish. I dont really agree with that at all. In particular my shotguns seems much better having pulled a good bore snake through half a dozen times. Sits back and waits for flak!!
  15. Lol. I'll have to prove it then when I next see him Tuesday! I checked my facts carefully!
  16. Having got advice form this forum to get my Cobra NV focussed I now want to follow the 2nd bit of advice and improve the IR light source from the Deben mini I have to something more powerful. My only requirements are that it isn't huge because I shoot out of the Landrover frequently, it isn't a narrow beam because I like to flood an area so I can scan fields quickly and it should have a very good ball joint type adjustment so I can quickly and easily adjust the zero of the beam. My deben mini is a fixed bracket and very often I find the beam is too low and wont adjust sufficiently. Any of you guys tell me what your using and getting good results? The first Ive found is the Clulite Masterlite, which seems more of a big torch so I'm not convinced that will be more powerful than what I have now once IR filtered.
  17. Took delivery of this scope today and set up as per instructions many of you guys have given and would you believe it worked straight out of the box with no parallx adjustment required. Dont get me wrong it was only at 15 yards in my garden but recticle is crystal and image is good for onboard IR on the Cobra NV. Next to take it into the field, get it zeroed and see how the bunnies like it. Thanks to all you guys that waded in with the advice and were so pateient with me! Nice scope Steve for the money. Excellent recommendation. Cheers mate.
  18. No idea how he achieved it but what I said straight upfront was exactly how it was. A brass tube, 2/3rds the diameter of say a standard SAK producing reducing the volume of a standard CCI to less than a Winchester Sub through a wildcat mod. Obviously need to record it and take a pic for you guys when I'm in next Tuesday!
  19. Yeah exactly what I'm doing but as ever you guys have provided some useful food for thought as to what its actually doing.
  20. What in case it's badly engineered?
  21. Yeah I guess they are fairly simple in design! I just couldn't believe how quiet this one was. Virtually cancelled all noise and we were in an echoey indoor range
  22. Lol. No sounds like we are talking about the same thing! I'll try an do I recording next week. It wasn't even a question of 'is that a bit quieter' it was massively quieter. So much so the whole range stopped to take a look! Standard velocity CCI's quieter than subs through my gun! I was there mate an even loaded and used the gun myself!
  23. Sorry you may have misunderstood! I'm talking .22. He was shooting standard CCI and I was shooting Winchester subs. His homemade and far smaller moderator was massively quieter than me shooting subs. He suggested he could make me a .22 mod and a .17 HMR mod. The .22 I've seen an heard personally. The .17 HMR, as people have said, I don't think he can do anything with and he hasn't tried to do yet!
  24. Yeah having read everyones comments this is kind of where I have ended up. Having only shot rf so far, it seems sensible to build up slow although .223 is going to be all I need in deepest darkest cheshire!
  25. I was shooting at the range last night zeroing a .22 Ruger using subs and a wildcat moderator. It was fairly quiet as you would expect. The guy next to me rolls up with what looked like a scabby bit of pipe on the end of his gun and I couldnt believe how quiet it was. There was a faint click of the hammer and that was it. Half the noise of my moderator and then when I looked again I could see he was using standard velocity CCI's as well. I had a quick chat with him and it turns out he makes his own mods from brass tube and claims its good for 50 shots then needs soaking in solvent before you use it again. The moderator was about 2 thirds the diameter of a SAK or my wildcat. It looked pretty scabby but the results were amazing! I've asked him to make one for me and also think about something for my .17 HMR. Anyone got any expereience of homemade mods? Without doubt the quietest .22 moderator Ive ever heard! I dont hold out for as good results for the HMR but anything to subdue that crack would be good!
