  1. When i was a young gun you were conciderd to be a whoosy if you wore air defenders .I never wore ear protection for many years and have sufferd the consequences ,i have a hearing loss that the doctors have put down to exposure to gunfire . Just a word of warning if you are marking down the butts on the range .The super sonic crack of the bullets passing overhead is worse for the hearing than the bang of the gun . What ever ear muffs or plugs you wear will offer protection against hearing loss , What did you say . Harnser .

:good: Protect your hearing no matter what the cost, like Harnser its too late for me as well. I have a permanant ringing in my left ear.

  2. Hi All

Been using a deben tracer atom for a while and many of you have said on previous posts it's worth getting the dimmer switch. Only problem is I've searched the internet and local shops but have not been able to find one anywhere. Does anyone have contact details of where I could get one.

    cheers

    Scout

Or Deben part no.GA2680 dimmer switch alone £31.95. Any good gun shop will order what you want at the prices quoted.

  3. This is my dog run, I used 6ft high chain link fencing its 17ft in length X 6.5 ft in width.

The concrete has a drop of 1inch from the back to the front to allow the water to drain into the channel that's connected to the sewer at the back of the house. The kennel itself is 4ft in length X 3ft in width. To build the whole lot it cost me something in the region of €400.

I was going to roof it with some corrugated sheets that an uncle of mine is going to give me but I dont know if I'll bother.

I need to get some cow matting for the kennel for the dogs to sleep on.

The dogs live outside in the kennel all year round with no problems.

Looking at the run again, 2ft high boarding around the bottom, but outside the wire to prevent pups chewing it, acts as a wind break, otherwise it can be a bit drafty. A raised sleeping bench just a foot off the ground is better than laying on damp concrete. A smallish pallet with a sheet of ply top is good.

I am at the design stage with my four block kennel and will be incorporating improvements learned since building my last one at the old house.

  4. webber was involved in a serious propane explosion this morning and is in the Burns Unit at Whiston Hospital.

He has lost his hair and his face is burnt, but he was wearing safety glasses, so his eyes are OK.

His legs received category two burns.

He will be able to read Pigeon Watch, thanks to Patientline, but will find the keyboard hard to use for a while.

We wish him all the best and hope he makes a 100% recovery.

Sorry to hear about your accident, I hope you make a full recovery :hmm: and can be back with us soon.

    All the best

  5. Looking for advice on what pattern of camo netting to get for pigeon shooting, im looking for a good alround colour, does anyone have any good recommendations?

Im particulary interested in the realtree patterns such as Max 4, Advantage Timber, Hardwoods, Mossy Oak and so on.

Which ones have people used and recommend?

    Cheers Guys

    Mr Toad

    Hi MR T,

I have tried most and the best has always been imo the lightweight army surplus, its net based so that seasonal vegetation can easily be added, it passes wind, excuse me  and is rotproof, the worst I have tried was the printed sheet with cut outs, it fades in the sun over time and turns pale, it billows about in a breeze and becomes brittle after a few years, buy it at your peril

  6. Apparently and I have only read of them but there is a cross called a salmon trout, I have never come across them in the waters I fish but would certainly like to, did it fight well or did you tow it in like a log?

Let us know if it tastes any different.

  8. Will this pass a police inspection for shotguns?

    with the door being removerble

Has passed inspection for the last 15yrs, it has two pins that locate into the bottom of the cab and the lock is central at the top of the door, it has the advantage that when the door is removed full access is available and guns can be taken out without having to negotiate the hinged door.

I would not be offering it for sale on here if it was not up to the job. :good:

The only reason I am selling it is that I have now bought a much deeper cab to take 3 scoped rifles.

Imo its actually stronger than the hinged design.

  9. Does anyone know a friendly founder who could manufacture a cast iron soil pipe for me?

It's a small job, but needs to be done well. I have a picture and a plan in email-able form if they need it.

    Regards,

    LS

Hi LS can I ask why you dont visit the many reclaimation yards we have in Kent? Surely you can find what you are looking for in one, unless you want your coat of arms on the hopper? :D

  10. Pup arrives in just under two weeks  so I am getting a few things organised, this week's job is a kennel and run.

I don't need anything too fancy as the idea is she will be in the kennel/run for parts of the day then in the house at night. I have bought a timber kennel with internal wind partition and plenty of room for her and I will make the run, the whole lot is sited on a slabbed area next to my house.

I hadn't intended roofing over the run and I'm interested to hear what others do.

    Thanks.

    WGD

Hi WGD, I built my kennels with a roof of clear HD perspex over the runs so that the light went through, I did this as much for my benefit as for the dogs, it was not much fun for them when we had day after day of rain and it was very unpleasant when the snow lay about for days and cleaning was difficult , they had a dry run to exercise in which was much better and they seemed happier. I would avoid, if possible, using slabs as the cracks attract dirt etc and even with hosing they never are really as clean as a concrete floor.

  11. Well Hd thats a load of old eye wash, an old wives tale or perhaps an extract from John Bately's book.

Which planet are you on, it don't matter how a flock is disturbed, if they are sure of food elsewhere, and this is the biggy, clap em off - walk em off - shoot em off, they won't be back period

Perhaps for you but not for me, I do it whenever necessary and it works for me.

Also that would mean gas guns would work every time, which they don`t. Many people will testify to seeing 100`s of birds on a rape field and the gas gun goes off and the birds lift, circle and drop straight back in !

Its certainly not old eye wash, as most experienced pigeon shooters will tell you to walk the birds off the field and set up asap, they will return if thats the field they have been feeding on, and you will know it is IF you have done your homework, in smaller groups providing far better sport than if you had barged onto the field firing both barrels at rapidly never to be seen again birds.

  12. I shall merely invite them to consider their pricing and if that gets no joy then it's every regulatory body I can find and Watchdog.

Sounds like an abso;ute ripoff, "which" mag would be very interested in this one, full marks young man for taking up the issue on her behalf and let us know what happens as it happens, be a thorn in their side for everyone they have shafted recently.

  13. I posted about this last year too. My Briggs and Stratton 35 is playing up.Has done since I got it despite spending its value in repairs which dont last. I had very kind offers to look at it which due to pc problems I lost contact details. Its only 5 or so years old and only cuts a small garden. The spark plug needs cleaning continuously as it smokes very black. To start it I have to remove the air filter and pour fuel straight in.The primer bulb rarely works. It keeps cutting out every couple minutes, quicker if the grass is longer. I would gladly pay for someone to look at it because I have tried everything. I live near Macclesfield.I paid £70 for it serviced 3 years ago but it was still giving problems and would just buy a leccy one before paying that again.

    Many thanks

Hi Vole, I had a similar problem a year or so ago with same engine, problem was a £2 rubber diaphram, the mower shop told me what to do, as they had a month waiting list, it took me half an hour...... to find my socket set  and 15 mins later the beast roared into life and one man went to mow as they say  it fits somewhere under the air filter towards the carb and causes the engine to play up as you describe, for a couple of quid its worth a punt??

Hope you get it sorted as theres nothing worse than long grass, a nice dry day a a sulky mower

  14. CX04 X0Z is one hell of a number plate

That plate is currently on a Landrover Disco,

See www.askmid.com can be lots of fun snooping on the boy racers :o

Suprising when the vicars plate should be on something else :stupid:

    D2D

How did you tell it was on a disco?

All the website told me was yes my vehicle was on the list but not what it was?

Hi Dr W, top left shows a yellow mock up no plate with the number you have entered, under it should show make and model, it will also confirm if the vehicle is showing on the database as being insured.

Try a few other numbers known to yourself, I dont know why your vehicle is not showing the model details :o :good::/

  15. Hi was just wondering if you would be so kind to comment on this :hmm:

imagine this situation you are in the hide and you spot a flock of about 50 to 100 pigeons coming towards your hide. :D

Is it best to let the majority fly over before having a shot at the few that land in the pattern  or take a shot at the ones flying over. this happened shooting over Rape

The general practice is to let one bird land and shoot the next one as it flares its wings just before touchdown, inside your 40yd marker sticks, as soon as you have taken the shot move onto the one that is now just taking off, result.... two birds for two carts :)

  16. 22.17 Under section 161 of the Highways Act

1980, it is an offence for any person, without

lawful authority or excuse, to discharge any

firearm within fifty feet of the centre of any

highway which comprises a carriageway, if in

consequence, any user of the highway is

injured, interrupted or endangered. For these

purposes a carriageway means a highway

(other than a cycle track) over which the

public have a right of way for the passage of

vehicles. The Highways Act does not apply in

Scotland but Procurators Fiscal may use

common law offences of “culpable and

    reckless conduct†and “reckless

    endangerment†in situations in which the

1980 Act would be contravened in England

    and Wales.

I have to say this Sam you may be a chocolate fireguard at shooting rooks, but your skills at finding the legislation etc are appreciated.
