  1. With over 100 yards of panel fencing that needs "treating" I have been thinking about getting one of the sprayers being advertised on the TV at the moment.

I already have one of the pump up reservoir back pack sprayers for my fruit trees and although its quite efficient, it does need pumping up quite frequently.

When you have a lot of spraying to do, this can be quite a nuisance.

I have seen electric sprayers referred to , I can't find much info on them, but I assume these are rechargeable.

Has anyone got one of these and are they any good ?

Yep, bad earth - but check all the bulb holders  I rectified a problem on Suzukis with the same sympyoms a few years ago but eventualy i binned the rear lights & wiring & started affresh !!! Check for water leak/corrosion on the fuse box also

When you have the bulbs out give everything a spray of WD40, it works like magic on electrical connections.

  2. When is a pest a pest?

When I read this thread. It made me think.

A weed in my garden is a wild flower in the hedgerow down the road.

If a species is not causing damage does it still retain its pest status?

Is a fox on arable land that lives of rats, a pest?

Because of VHD one island of the Welsh coast lost all the rabbits that lived there, now the Puffins have left because the grass has grown too tall and they do not feel secure. The pest status of rabbits is without question but in this case they were part of a bigger picture of ecology.

Without a shadow of a doubt pests have to be controlled.

My question is, do you feel that there is a time where culling is not warranted?

    TC

I totally see your point although others are looking at it more from a defensive attitude, I think it is correct in saying that with ever increasing development spewing onto green belt land can only mean one thing, and that is us as a race have invaded the natural environment in which creatures once lived and along with that comes responsibility. Every area and species as a result need individual attention and conservation, and in a lot of cases culling to keep populations in check is paramount but in a lot of cases sheer abundance in those populations gives us good sport!

Its a very good question and IMO SH sums it up well, resposibility is the keyword, if I were in danger of wiping out the population of any species on any of my shoots I would undoubtably ease off, personally I dont shoot during the breeding season unless called upon to deal with a rabbit, rook or fox problem by local farmers, that is my personal choice and I am the happier for it.

As said by Harsner I have two, sometimes more, fat woodies on my lawn they are doing me no harm and I have an opportunity to study them close up but I dont feel the need to kill them, later in the year I shall shoot hundreds but for now I let nature get on with it.

We have trapped, shot and ferreted hard up until this month and will do again next season. Meanwhile its approaching the time to get the fly rod out and seek out some fresh local asparagus to go with the trout.

  3. You dont say what the SJ is going for?

Common sense tells me it has to be the SJ but at the right price, they are rustbuckets but are lighter than a landy on the land, frugal with the juice and parts are still available.

I have never gone with common sense, had 2 SJ,s, a fourtrack, a shogun and every mark of landy they made, I just like landrovers and always will, they have their faults but imo there is nothing to compare, they are the real deal.

Whatever you do include the wife she might even outdrive you  and enjoy having fun in the mud :good:

  4. ......... of finding out what the rabbit population is like on your permishon.

the main problem i have is that the warrens on my permishon ar on railway bankings that are coverd in folage brabes ect so i cnt actualy see them as they come out of the warren.

i have tryed sitting out into the field with the wind in my face but the rabbits dont seem to come out dureing the day so i have no idea what the population is like.

I dont think you will be able to tell just how many you have, just have to rely on experience in fieldcraft, to be able to pick up on the tell tale signs of activity, fresh droppings, fur pulled out during mating, extra scrapes and of course crop damage where they graze further out in the field.

A good time to observe bunny activity is when it has been raining hard all day and night, they graze just enough to stave off the hunger and retreat back in the burrows where its dry, if its stopped raining next morning they will all be out til later than normal trying to catch up on lost feeding time.

  5. Can't find the battery life for the lightforce lamps. Deben states that you get 1.5 hours for the max pro, is the Lightforce comparable?

Please help its a minefield :good:

Hi battery life is governed by the AH rating and the wattage of the bulb.

The times below are in minutes before recharging would be due.

    battery amp/hours

    Watts 7ah 10ah 14ah 17ah 20ah

    30 90 135 180 230 270

    55 50 75 125 135 160

    100 30 50 60 80 100

As said a lightforce 170 would be overkill but a 140 imo would be better than a tracer having got both and used them in the field, as to battery a 7ah, but if you are intending to use a red filter then a 55w bulb with a vertical spot filament is essential as the filter cuts down the range.

My lightforce lamps are deffo superior to the tracers, whatever you buy get a dimmer this will further conserve the battery and extend your hunting range.

    Hope this has helped.

It's a good day out for all the family :good:

As said brilliant day out for all the family, beertent, bookies, popcorn and candyfloss..... well at ours anyway

Run by the local hunt, most are ordinary hunting horses ridden by farmers and gals, who fancy themselves as grand national jocks, the aim of the day is to provide funds for the hunt so support it if you can.

Ive had a go at this....... once, ended up on my ***** laughing my socks off:lol:

  8. Im good friends with the local farmer, and he has given permission to shoot wen ever on the land! it is mainly rape with some growing wheat! the problem is im not sure about these flight lines! i get out and watch a field covered in birds, and the birds attack the field from all directions? i drive to the hill, which over looks most of the land, with the binoculars, i pick out pigeons, flying in all direcions? any help on identifing them? also if there is snow forcasted this weekend, what tips are there to attracting the birds to a snow covered field? thanks

I have found the best time to identify a flight line is after the early morning feeding frenzy 08.30 ish this time of year, that is when they have filled their crops and flown back to the sitty trees to digest, as they will have different amounts of food to digest they will be returning to the field to feed again at different times, ie in dribs and drabs, it should be relatively easy for you to see where they are coming from if you start at the feeding field and trace them back a field or two, possibly to a nearby wood.

If you set up your hide to intercept them on route either way better sport can be had imo than shooting on the actual field.

This type of pigeon shooting can be very exciting, and demanding, when there is a strong wind blowing to keep the birds flying low and fast, I have shot pigeon that have been flying through the gaps in the hedgerows doing 70mph with a wind behind them. Giving them 3 weeks lead

Hope this gives you a few ideas.

  9. hi guys is there any joiners on here from the Leeds west York's area. Russ

Have you heard about that carpenter chap from nazareth, always looking for joiners.

Sorry Russ couldnt resist it, I hope you are soon fixed up there will always be a demand for skilled tradesmen.

  10. My sister lives near Newcastle in a small rural town and has a tree, she doesn`t know what kind, that pulled the wires from the telephone pole as the upper branches are in between. The nice BT man said that they would make repairs 3 times before they would charge and my sis doesn`t want the hassle or cost obviously. All I am after is can I fell the tree without any consequences ?? or would it be better to just lop/trim the upper branches ??

I have felled quite a few trees, but only in woods and feel confident to trim/fell it if it is legal to do so.

Many thanks to all relevant replies

I would just confirm it was not in any way protected and /or in a conservation area, if neither then crack on and do the job.

    D2D

  11. I have just had to make a statement about an incident.

Earlier on I was with this kid and he took an egg from my house and said to me on the way out that he was going to egg something I said no but he didnt liston. About five minutes later he said he wanted to chuck it at a moving car and I said you chuck it at your own risk. So he chucked it at this car and they guy in the car stopped and chased us he went straight for the kid and caught him up.

He went back to his house and the police went to his house. He made a statement and I think that he blamed me for throwing the egg. So they came round to my house and took a statement, I completly told the truth and after the statement had been done. They said to me are you sure you did not chuck the egg. I went yeah im sure.

I then asked what is going to happen. The policeman said the kid will get charged as it nearly caused an accident and I may need to go to court to give evidence.

Now the thing that scares me is that I told the police that he took the egg from my house but I did say that he couldnt. Would I get done for something here?

And would it affect me getting my SGC when I apply?

    Thanks

    DF

DF having read your post several times my take on this is that having just turned 23yrs old you should by now have entered the adult world with all its responsibilities and concerns, instead you seem, from your post, to be still in waltermitty land.

You describe this person as a boy and I assume from that he is a juvenile, you should not have allowed him to steal the egg from your home never mind stayed in his company when he told you of his intentions.

To throw an object at a moving vehicle is not clever, the driver may have swerved into the path of another vehicle or worse onto the pavement, he would not have known what it was being thrown at him, many drivers have been killed by bricks and stones thrown by idiots.

By making no effort to stop him and remaining in his company while he carried out the act imo makes you an accessory to the crime, you will be lucky if the police do not take this line and charge you.

As to being granted a licence to possess a shotgun, draw your own conclusions

    D2D

  12. Quite a lot of **** in this thread so lets summarise:

--No licence is required to own lead slugs on their own

--A Firearms Certificate is required to posses and use lead slugs that are loaded into cartridges

--A shotgun cartridge is one that contains 5 or more pieces of shot, the diameter of which does not exceed .36 inch.

--A shotgun is a smooth-bore weapons with a barrel of at least 24" and having a bore with a diameter no greater than 2 inches.

--The 1 3/4" rule is the maximum bore that may be used to shoot birds.

"Quite a lot of ****" steady eddy

Members post in good faith and some may be put off posting at all with comments like that Sam.

Im sure many will view it this way.

  13. As for "would this be becoming of a gentleman", not sure where you are coming from there!

I say old boy. "chortle chortle snort" What are you insinuating. I merely meant, would it be gentleman-like to be caught with ones breeks down and a red handed scullery maid?

Or indeed a red cheeked scullery maid :good::hmm:

    D2D

  14. As another newbie I have been associated with the TROLLs by a few members already. I don't even know what a TROLL is. But, whatever it is, I suppose that it is exactly how the poncy game shooters in their fancy dress costumes regard us pigeon shooters and vermin controllers, especially if we wear cammo and use a semi-auto. So we have developed broad shoulders to protect us from gratuitous insults from those guys anyway.

    Jim

Jimbo, there are or shouldnt be any "them and us" attitude regarding game/any shooters, I enjoy all forms of shooting and have shot and picked up on the same shoots as titled members of royalty yet those on here that have met me will no doubt agree I just an ordinary regular bloke.

Most shooters would jump at the chance to experience as many forms of countrysports as possible, I tried Foxhunting for a couple of years when I was younger , not for me kept falling off  but I have nothing against the hunt even though some of them were deffo up their own backsides ???

Alot of our members have their own formal driven shoots, does that make them poncy and insulting, I dont think so.

Shooting is becoming hard to come by and you will not get far if you label people toffs, most are decent ordinary shooters.

Just my opinion on your views.

    D2D

  15. The government maybe *****, but they're always stupid ***** - they've thought of this and if you check, you'll find that you can't tax your vehicle before the 15th day, of the month prior to expiry - so in short, you couldn'y have taxed it, at pre-fudget prices...

Cranfield, I never gave it a thought, til this morning :o

Lefty, you are right and I feel sooo much better now, oh how I hate it when I feel Ive missed out

Anyway enough of this idle banter, time I was down the wood, see you all later provided the sites not shut down again :good:

  16. Free Wheel Hubs now there's a debate

IMO a complete waste of time, fuel saving is minimal ref back issues of LRO

annoying when unsupectingly stuck having to clamber out usually through mud and **** to engage them :o

better off with an overdrive or RR diffs for better fuel economy

    ps

i have in my loft about 100 issues of LRO and the first 20 or so LRW usefull reading for anyone starting out on the Solihull product range

    TP

Ah now we have a debate, kept clean and lubed I have never had problems with sticking hubs and off roaded more than on in all seasons, how can you possibly say that there is no fuel saving when the engine is not having to drive the front wheels fitted with offroad treads, I agree that Overdrive is a real saving but its not often that you strike it that lucky to buy a good one already fitted with OD.

My fuel saving were noticable and there was deffo less noise/vibes, most series owners fit them as a matter of course so there has to be merit it them or they simply would not bother.

  17. Having received the tax disc reminder for my old defender very early I thought I would leave the cash in the bank until nearer the end of the month.... wrong move, we have just had the budget and it went up :o

If only I had taxed it online the day before the budget, true the cash would be spent but at pre budget price.

Makes me cross they can wait til the 29th now

    thank you

This may help and anythings worth trying, get a sack or several at different places and put some of its normal food in, (if its smelly or add something smelly and tasty), hopefully it will be found curled up asleep in the sack next morning.

  20. Possibly of interest, Lidle 20th.

Battery charger for 6v/12v sealed lead batts looks similar to Deben £4.99

Two way intercom hard wired (driver to shooter standing in back of pickup) £5.99

Could just be of use to someone?

    :good: D2D

  21. No, mixy not a problem at all, not much likely to bother him, snakes maybe, but you are unlikely to see them to keep him away from them. If you bring him into Essex you may meet a few aggressive rabbits at closing time, otherwise no problem.

On the subject of snakes, adders that is, normally suprised while asleep basking in the sun, they dont attack but act in self defense, if you suspect there may be a few about the best thing imo to do is become as heavy footed as you can, they will pick up on the vibrations and move away well before you get to them normally.

Pick the dog up if it is bitten, dont let it run around, this will slow the spread of the venom get help asap I would dial 999.

  22. Apologies to those (including me) that couldn't access the site yesterday and part of today, due to what seems to be a hosting problem.

As it only affected some members it is a bit of a mystery.

Hopefully, it is not something that reoccurs.

Cranfield. could you arrange for some warning in the future, so that I can arrange my chores around the stoppage, yesterday I worked all day in the garden like a preverbial....... then seeking some R&R in the evening found to my dismay that I was unable to log on, just not cricket you know :good:

    D2D

  23. Well said, now look forward to the next 5 years.... who,s got a crystal ball, perhaps we are better off not knowing and enjoying what liberties we have today as shooters?

I too have enjoyed my time on here and have met some of the members, all of whom would be welcome anytime to visit whenever in my area.

Keep up the good work lads.
